You’d have to ask a Welsh or Northern Irish person, I wouldn’t feel comfortable speaking on their culture. I’ve never even been to Wales! I do think there will be another referendum because it’s becoming increasingly popular in Scotland - polls are consistently showing more support for independence than opposition which was not the case previously. But of course the Tories are dead set against it so I don’t think it’ll happen in the immediate future. But we’ll see. I’ll probably not be eligible to vote either way as I won’t have lived in Scotland for a while. Last time I voted because I’d only left Scotland 2 weeks earlier and hadn’t changed where I was registered to vote.

I didn't vote Labour. Haven't done for years, at least since the Iraq War. But if there was anyone who was going to make me consider doing so again, it was Jeremy Corbyn. You have to think that if the Tory media (with a large and small "m" - BBC, I'm looking at you) were working so, so hard to smear this man, chances are he was getting the rich and powerful very, very worried. (Not convinced that that is a bad thing.)
Which is why it is a fine example of "doublethink" at work that the media wants to make the public believe the lies about him, but also make them believe that it is his fault that the party failed in the election. He went too far- BUT not far enough. He betrayed the Leavers AND the Remainers. He represented the metropolitan elite and the loony left. He was a pacifist who would sell our country out for peace, and a terrorist plotting the destruction of our stable society.

yesterday, as i vaccinated a man’s dog, he asked me where i was from, well no, he said “so you’re scottish”
- and i don’t mind this, i like talking about home, i like when people use it as a chance to tell me about their trips “up north” or when they used to live in scotland, it’s nice. it is however a little weird to me when longstanding clients seem surprised? (new clients, fair enough, i guess. maybe you’ve never met a scottish person in your tiny north england town before.) i’ve worked here for over three years. there was a scottish vet already working at my practice when i started. we currently have three scottish vets. and also i vaccinated this man’s dog last year too. so the surprise is a little unwarranted -
and i was like, yup. and mentioned that there’s a few of us in the practice, lest he be surprised at his next visit. “no jobs going in scotland”, “not when i was looking,” i reply, trying to jokingly acknowledge that yeah, i’d probably rather i was there too, mate. and then i drop one of my regular lines about how while i miss home and my family, it doesn’t feel that different here, the people and the sensibilities are quite similar to home (which might i add is a fucking compliment, and sadly sort of an exaggeration given the shitty political leanings of this area) and he says “oh, no. i don’t think so.”
and what the fuck, son?? yesterday, i wasn’t sure if he was being passively derogatory about scotland or about the north of england. but just in the typing of this now, and recalling the tone in which he mentioned vet jobs in scotland, it’s kind of dumb it wasn’t immediately evident that it was the former. and now it’s the weekend and i’m just sitting at home uselessly mad. what the fuck. where does he get off.
some days scotland increasingly feels like a socialist dreamscape, and i live in an area where i had to look at tommy robinson’s name on my ballot paper with my own two eyes and it made me feel physically sick. the only remain poster i saw during the eu ref in this town was in my own window.
i joke to my colleagues about moving back to scotland and campaigning for independence if boris becomes PM (not that there is an alternative that isn’t honestly equally abhorrent). but honestly, i’m tired. i’m tired of correcting my boss when she marvels about how “we don’t have any british vets”. i know i miss living near my family. i know i miss home. i shouldn’t be able to say i miss living in my own country, because i’m still fucking here, but some days it is very evident that the people around me don’t think so. i wish i’d known what that felt like during indy ref, i wish the years since hadn’t been a slow but ever increasing build of regret. i hope i’m back home for the next one.
