NGO in Kurnool
Sai Educational Rural & Urban Development Society (SERUDS) is a Non-Government Organization NGO in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh, India working as a charitable society or trust for the welfare and development of deprived street children, orphans, destitute women, poor old age people.
SERUDS has been working since 2003 through its need-based programs focused on access to education, food, livelihood training and healthcare. Read More.

Elderly women who are poor and live alone or with dependent children find them vulnerable, powerless and are neglected by their family or grown up children. Many are too old or physically weak and thus unable to find work. They are forced to beg, and are often homeless.
Moved by the plight of destitute single women, Seruds has taken up program of sponsoring elderly women on an urgent basis. Our volunteers and staff members conducted surveys and identified 120 destitute women who are above 60 year of age. These elderly women are widows or have been abandoned by their husbands. Some have children, but the children live apart and do not take care of their mothers. They do not have money for food, medical care and other basic necessities.
Giving a Life of Dignity to Elders
SERUDS launched Happy Old Age Home in January 2012 for abandoned & destitute women in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh,
Old Age Home is fully free and funded solely through donations. Home shelters 30 grannies at present.
Since 2012, 90 elders have called it their home during the last stage of their lives.

Support the Elders in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. Happy Old Age Home residents have been identified from different village of Kurnool and Mahaboob Nagar Districts, Hyderabad of Andhra Pradesh, India.
At SERUDS Home for the Aged, we have adopted good practices in order to provide a healthy, productive and participatory life to the elderly women residents.
There is space for pooja for daily prayers and all major festivals are celebrated. The women are motivated to keep themselves busy with activities like reading, regular walks, singing bhajans, and more.
Rights of senior citizens in India
Senior citizens group is projected to comprise 18% per cent of India’s total population by 2025. There are statutory provisions for maintenance of parents under Hindu personal law, and similar laws for other religions. Under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 it is a legal obligation for an heir or children to provide a monthly allowance to her parents as maintenance.
Unfortunately a large part of the population is unaware of them. This results in abuse of elders by family. It is estimated that nearly 25% of the elderly population experiences abuse by their sons, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, but never by daughters. It is ironic that parents feel that birth of a girl child is a burden on them! Most of the cases of abuse are not reported, as the elders want to protect family’s reputation in society. Read More.

32 million Indian children of age up to 13 years have never attended any school, the majority of them belonging to the socially disadvantaged class or poor families. In addition, 47 million children of secondary and higher secondary school-going age dropped out of school. Most government schools have a poor quality infrastructure, and lack teachers. Children mired in poverty are forced to drop out of school and find ways to survive. There are more than 33 million child labourers below the age of 18 years in India. Read More.
