maybe practise had ran over and he wasn't able to shoot hirano a text. he'd be back soon and rattling off the entire practise as though hirano was on the team and he needed to be caught up for not being there. he was always pumped up after practise, especially if it went well. it was fine, he wasn't the kid's dad.
kagi was late -- and now it was full dark outside.
maybe he had been invited to hang out with some of his team. maybe his phone had died so he couldn't send hirano a text. because kagi was always back before it got dark out and so there had to be a simple reason why he wasn't back at the dorm yet. it was fine, he could be protective over his roommate.
admittedly hirano had returned earlier than he had planned; he had developed a tickle in his throat overnight which had progressed from throat clearing and the odd cough here and there to near full fledged flu over the course of the day. he had returned to the dorm and told himself he would do a sensible amount of studying, apologise to his roommate in case he also ended up getting sick, and resolved himself to turning in earlier than usual because he'd take medicine and hopefully sleep the worst of it off.
but now it was later than he had planned to be awake for and overall his attempt at studying was basically rereading the same paragraph multiple times over without absorbing a single word and getting frustrated, glancing at his phone, or to the window, then forcing himself to focus and repeat.
all because kagi was late and hirano was worried.
it was okay though because kagi was tall and muscular so he could hold his own if he needed to -- and surely he would hear if something had happened to his roommate? he gave up on studying, huffing and shoving the textbook further back on his desk then dropped his arm onto the desk top and dropped his head on top of that in succession.
his mind was running through different scenarios and possible explanations, wondering whether he should just grab his jacket and go out looking for kagi himself -- until eventually he wore himself out with his worrying, his eyelids drooping to a close while hunched over his desk, and sleep claimed him without hirano ever giving it permission to do so.
