Incorrigible

(adj.) beyond correction or reform — describing someone (or something) so set in their ways that no amount of scolding, punishment, or pleading will change them. Often used with a mix of exasperation and affection.

The word comes from the Latin incorrigibilis, built from the prefix in- (not) and corrigere (to correct or set straight). Corrigere itself is a compound of com- (together, thoroughly) and regere (to rule or guide straight)—the same root that gives us “correct,” “rector,” and “regulate.”

So at its core, incorrigible literally means ‘not able to be guided straight.’ It entered English in the 14th century, initially carrying a heavy moral weight—applied to hardened sinners and criminals considered beyond the reach of redemption. Medieval theologians used it to describe souls so corrupted they were past saving.

Over time the word softened considerably. While it still can describe genuine wrongdoing, it more often lands with a wink—the incorrigible flirt, the incorrigible gossip, the child who simply cannot stop making mischief no matter how many times they're sent to their room. The exasperation is real, but so is the fondness. That tonal slide from damning to charming is part of what makes it such a versatile and enduring word.
