Sharing this here too
I do not usually make posts like this but recently I have seen a lot of content on Instagram, Twitter and I think tiktok too misunderstanding the meaning of intrusive thoughts, which may cause people experiencing them to be upset.
I have tried to shortly explain the difference of impulsive and intrusive and hope it will help people to understand and use the words correctly.
Reblogs are very much appreciated!
Felt like redrawing it with doctor
idk why we stopped calling out people who say “intrusive thoughts” when they mean “impulsive” but we have GOT to bring it back again. i really felt like we were making progress and now i’m seeing it everywhere again ugh
no im not gatekeeping mental illnesses just because i said you can't diagnose yourself from a single thing.
no you don't have ocd just because you "are a clean freak".
no you don't have bpd/bipolar just because you have mood swings.
no your abuser isn't a narcissist or narcissistic just because they abused you/manipulated you and no im not invalidating your trauma by saying this.
no just because you don't like people you don't have aspd. what?
no just because you thought someone called your name while you were listening to music doesn't mean you have schizophrenia/paranoia.
no just because you're "quirky😜" doesn't mean you have adhd.
no just because you like something very much doesn't mean you have a hyperfixation/autism.
no just because people have low/no empathy doesn't mean that they are evil.
no pwNPD don't relish in manipulating and abusing the innocent.
no just because you cut your hair at like 4 am doesn't mean you have intrusive thoughts, that's called an impulsive thought.
and NO just because someone has intrusive thoughts doesn't mean they want to act on them. they're called intrusive for a fucking reason.
fuck you.

The demons in my head keep trying to get me to chop my hair into a bob after I spent almost a year trying to grow it out, fml.
Honestly, I think both intrusive and impulsive thoughts need to be properly defined to the public. (As someone who suffers from both).
Because I've noticed that people will say stuff like "after thinking about it for weeks, I made the impulsive decision to buy this thing." That's not impulsive?? Being impulsive would be thinking about it for a second and then buying it without thinking about the consequences.
And while they can be fun sometimes (e.g a joke slipping out and everyone finds it funny, or randomly dying your hair and liking it), in my experience, it's usually super embarrassing.
If I do something impulsive, 9 times out of 10, I will be up all night thinking about how embarrassed I am afterwards. "Why did I say/do that, I'm such an idiot" is a common thought.

This is a PSA!
(is Humans Are Space Orcs still alive?)
Aliens have been around for about a year, and this one has an Audhd roommate.
A:Ah! Human! Come, I'm making tea! But be careful, the kettle is still on.
H:Mh, alright.
H:...I'm gonna touch it. *Human announces while reaching fingie to the kettle.*
A:Wha- HUMAN NO!
TEN MINUTES LATER
A:*Sips iced tea before pausing* Did we learn our lesson?
H:*Is forced to wait for tea to cool down* ...yeah.
A:Good, it is not wise to- HUMAN WHAT DID I JUST SAY?!
H:*is chugging near boiling hot tea at a rapid pace*
(not stereotyping I wrote this based on my experience and being told somethings too hot)
