Caretaker waited. They waited for hours in the tiny whitewashed room, staring at Whumpee’s empty cot.
Whumper had taken Whumpee hours ago, in the middle of sleeping hours, what Caretaker and Whumpee thought of as 'night'. The lights got turned off during that time, at least.
They were each awoken with a shock. A literal shock. Whenever Whumper or an assistant opened the door, the chips in their necks lit up with electricity, shocking them into immobility so they couldn't rush the door. The chips could do lots of things. They were used for lots of things.
Caretaker had been dreaming about blue water. About warmth on their shoulders, and light coming from...somewhere. Color. And a sweet taste on their tongue.
Memories. Memories they didn't even know they had anymore. Blurry, unfocused, and disjointed, but real. They had to be. There were so many colors.
Then the lights had come on, and the sweet taste was real and electric on their tongue as the door flew open. The colors disappeared with the dream, and Whumper disappeared with Whumpee.
Whumpee's raggedy blue blanket still lay in a crumpled pile where it had fallen from their shoulders when they were ripped from sleep and dragged away, kicking and screaming.
After a while of staring at it, Caretaker stood up and folded the blanket. They wanted it to be neat when Whumpee returned.
They held it up by the corners and folded it in half, then another half, then in thirds.
Then they froze.
They....they hadn't done that in a long time. They didn't even think about how to do it. Their hands just knew how. The realization was a comfort: that some fragment of an old life, even a small one, was still with them, buried somewhere, refusing to die.
With the blanket placed neatly at the end of Whumpee's bed, Caretaker returned to their own cot, knees tucked up to their chest. Back to waiting. There was nothing else to do.
A familiar jolt shot down Caretaker's spine. They groaned and seethed as every muscle locked up and burned under their skin.
The door opened. Whumpee fell into the room. Caretaker glimpsed Whumper's bemused smile before the door sealed again.
After a moment, they could move again. "Whumpee!" Caretaker gasped when they caught their breath. "Are you hurt?"
It was a bad question. Nothing good ever happened when either of them had to leave the room. And one look at Whumpee was enough to know that this time was different. Worse.
Whumpee's white shirt and shorts were soaked through with sweat, the thin fabric clinging to their skin. Mercy, their skin was as pale as their clothes. Thin blue and purple veins branched in places that they usually didn't show--ankles, thighs, the crook of the arm. Their hair was soaked with sweat. Deep purple bags hung under their wild, unseeing eyes. They'd been crying. Still were.
Whumpee shook all over, shivering, or terrified. Both.
But what terrified Caretaker the most was the eyes. They were cloudy, distant. They weren't Whumpee's eyes.
"Whumpee..." Caretaker said softly. They inched forward.
Whumpee flinched.
"Whumpee, it's me. You're alright."
Whumpee snatched the folded blanket, unravelling it almost manically, and tried to drape it over their legs and shoulders. Their hands shook so badly that the blanket kept slipping away.
"Here," Caretaker said, taking a corner of the blanket to readjust.
Whumpee flinched away so hard that they fell over, kicking away until their head hit the wall with a hard whack, their eyes still seeing something far away and terrible.
This wasn't Whumpee. At least, it wasn't the same Whumpee. What had Whumper done?
Caretaker wanted to hold them like they had so many times after Whumper did their worst.
"...why won't you look at me?" Caretaker said.
Whumpee whimpered, clenching and unclenching the blanket in their fingers like a child. "D-don't even know you..."
Cybernetic enhancements are commonplace, thanks to the many medical advancements in recent years, as well as the ever increasing demands of the unbound growth in the economy.
Implantation of the tech can be performed with minimal trauma, and some companies even require them. Usually however the enhanced productivity it grants means that employees volunteer to procedures for the benefit of the greater whole.
Cybernetics come in a large number of varieties. Prometius Koinonia was one of the first Megacorps that developed what are considered "true" cybernetics, binding machine learning flash chips to nerves to provide communication between flesh and technology without the inconsistency of magitech.
As they expand their developing range, they developed five core chips which connect into different areas of interest, and have since become the global standards.
Earth chips tend to work towards maximising productivity, and are the most common implants. "Swiss keys" are built based on these, and simply allow the controller to deactivate tiredness and wearineds reception in the brain. Other ones include "Gilder Locks", a common economists tool to enforce company trading standards while allowing much more autonomy than would be typically allowed.
Water chips are used for thing such as holographic manipulation and artistic expression. Laser gyroscopic balance plugs are connected using these, as are Virtual Echo soundboards common to daytime television hosts, who want to provide live entertainment to the guests, though Virtual Echo provide a range of instruments.
The other chips are Air, which is used when connecting to both inter- and exo-nets. Fire, used for combat enhancements such as Knois Reactive plates, though most have them for weapon recognition chips required by most sovereignties that permit firearms. And finally Aether chips, which connect to raw bodily enhancement implantations via a distributed net. These implants are more extensive and advanced than simple "Keys", which simply hack into the brain to prevent recognition of exhaustion, and instead improve the bodies capabilities, from enhanced intelligence to muscular activity re-organisation to simple nanobot healing.
Claims that imbalanced implantation of these chips cause mental health problems in those using it is often derided as luddite fear mongering, but some independent studies have shown that the hijacks used can lead a person's identity being over-worn, and that testing currently performed is inadequate, as it is often done on wealthy, middle class Atlantean students or other Student populations likely to be in a better situation to be capable of adapting and defining themselves outside of the implants, or in general population studies volunteers tend to be those with various implants already, and are thus able to balance the nerve drives better, since the inventors designed them for interchangeability and mutual compatibility.
Meanwhile, those who end up with them as part of employment, whether that's corporate demands or necessary to keep up with the times of their respective industry, usually have far less balanced implant schemes.
The studies that are made on the effect of over-reliance on particular chip varieties are still relatively few, and often hard to find, but a fuzzy picture that doesn't look good is coming forth. Yet, unless current practices change, the trajectory isn't likely to change. Only the Laputan Government has implemented requirements that labour must be able to be performed without expectation of implantation.

In the end it is simple, if slightly painful. The zygotes are placed in Jenny's prepared uterus. There is a slight pinch and it is done. She is directed to lay with her feet and pelvis slightly elevated.
"How do ye feel?" Jamie asks her. He sits beside her, him and Claire. Ian is at her other side.
"Weel not yet pregnant, if that be what ye are asking me brother."
"Did it hurt?" Claire is anxious to make sure she is okay. Her gift is invaluable. She wants to do all she can to see her comfortable and provided for. She and Jamie are paying for all her, uncovered medical expenses. She has promised that Willy and, any future children will have free child care at her center. They have started a college savings account for Willy.
"Dinna fash Claire. Was naught but a slight pinch." She understands her position better then her brother ever will. Bring a woman who has to have another woman carry her child is unimaginably hard on her.
Claire nods as Jenny squeezes her hand. "So, is there anything you need? Anything we can get you?"
"Thank ye but I am fine." Ian smiles at her. She is thankful for his support. She knows Jamie and Claire are also. Having your wife carry her brother's bairn( s) canna be an easy thing. He will also have more to do with Willy and around the house. But, he had mummored not one word of complaint. She got a good one.
She lays still for a hour before being allowed to move. She moves carefully to a sitting position. Jamie and Claire watch her anxiously. "Dinna fash. These be Fraser's. We are a hardy bunch." Jamie laughs at this and Claire cracks a smile. "Seriously, I will be taken extra care to keep the bairn(s) safe. I wish naught to happen to my niece or nephew."
They all head back to Lallybroch, with Jamie driving as slow as he is legally allowed. Jenny sighs several times. "Do ye plan on getting us home before the bairn be born, then brother?" She says at one point.
Eventually they make it home. Jenny is placed on the couch with her feet propped up. She sents Ian and Jamie off to attend to Willy.
"Can I talk with ye about something Claire?"
"Of course."
"I am honored to be carrying yer child or children. Truly. But, I fear their future."
Claire frowns. "Why?"
"Because ye and Jamie are not married. Ye will be adopting Fergus. He has Arabella. Where does that leave them? I ken ye plan on raising them all together. But, I fear without a legal bond that if something was to happen, the wee Fraser or Frasers, would be harmed in the aftermath."
"You have a good point," she bites her lip and twist her hands together.
"Dinna get me wrong. I am a modern woman. I dinna think marriage is necassary to fulfill a woman or man. But with coming and existing bairns."
"No. I get it. You have giving me something to think about."
