This school year has been one of most challenging years I’ve ever had teaching. I’ve had to question whether I should continue in this profession or move on. I have amazing students but it’s been difficult to celebrate those qualities as often as I’d like. Out of nowhere, 1 of my students hada me a gift bag and I can see the stuff monkey on top. We are headed out for lunch so I say I’ll open it later. They make sure to tell me there are snacks on the bottom. The day passes and I didn’t get a chance to open the bag. As we walk out to go home, they remind me again that there are snacks in there. When I get back to class, I grab the bag thinking it’s a belated Christmas gift. After I take my fuzzy monkey out of the bag, there are 2 hand drawn cards that you see with the Nerds candies in there as well. I open the 1st card and the not is apologizing to me for how the class has been making me feel and asking me to not quit. The next card is more of the same but with uplifting quotes (I love quotes) about perseverance. To say I’m choked up would be an understatement. I’m still shaking off my sea legs after an incredible trip guiding with @iceaxeexpeditions down in Antarctica. Waves of emotions came through for me on this trip, triggered by a stunning location, heart warming humans, and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. . I couldn’t help thinking about @hilareenelson during this trip, most notably her quote “it’s important to have passion as a compass in life”. There were a myriad stories of how and why every person landed aboard this ship, and the defining thread was woven from passion as its source - passion for these wild places, exploration, travel, learning,touring, etc. . More will come from that thought later on… but, for now, the journey home to Squamish begins. . An enormous thank you to everyone who shared space aboard the ship this last while, the staff aboard the Ocean Diamond and @quarkexpeditions, and @iceaxeexpeditions for having me and my crew come create in the Southern Hemisphere.
