Jan 22nd, 2020 || 🌿my latest reads🌿 . 👉🏼 i'm afraid of men by Vivek Shraya. this little book (barely 80 pages) manages to pack so much into it. it’s all about Shraya’s experiences with men regarding her identity and her transition. it is very raw and honest. i have only one complain: i wish it were longer. rating: 8.5/10 . 👉🏼 ghachar ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag. another short one that again manages to “talk” about loads of stuff. first of all, shout out to the incredible translation by Srinath Perur because it truly doesn’t feel as if this novel was translated. the language just flows beautifully. the novel is basically about a family who goes from poverty to sudden wealth and how that affects them individually and collectively. Im Afraid of Men
This book was part of my popsugar reading challenge for this year and the reading prompt was to read a book from a trans/non gender binary author.
This book is the reason why I do these challenges. normally I wouldn't of found this little gem on my own if it wasn't for this challenge.
Even though this was a short read, it was a very powerful one. she speaks about how with men they expect to little of them and so much for women. also she speaks about her experiences of being a trans woman of color and how she would always have to be aware of her space.
As a woman that hit me hard because unless you are a woman you do not know what it is like to walk out of a store and have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. because you never know how you may be kidnapped or someone is going to follow you....or worse. I remember having a talk with my husband in regards to him being aware of his surroundings and it never occurred to him that this is the day to day ways of women.
I would give this book 4.5/5 stars
#marchwrapup, a few days late because my momma was in town. As you can see, I’m doing well on my resolutions to use the library more/better (though most of these were impulse finds rather than holds) as well as to read more non-fiction. Not pictured is a kid’s biography of Lafayette that I checked out for my Hamilton-obsessed kids, and which they insisted I read as well. Somehow this has become my year of reading the Revolution, like last year turned into my year of reading the Civil War. I might as well go with it at this point.
