feeling so ageric to gagobears today
anyway ok so. the technical issue we had.
last week we had this participant for the MEG and we started setting up and realized the audio was only coming in for him from the left ear, we couldnt fix it, so we sent him home and rescheduled for today. today he came again and we set up and everything was working and it was great and i started the acquisition and then went to start the experiment and matlab (which we run the experiment on) wasn't working.... it was saying the administrator doesn't give me permission to run this app... i restarted the stimulus pc and logged in again and then it was giving me an error reading the matlab license which apparently is because the pc has to be connected to internet in order to verify the license since the institute didn't want to pay more for the program to actually fully be on the computer lol. and the ethernet was disconnected. called in the IT guy and he was baffled. like. it's ETHERNET. and it was working on every other pc in the lab just not that one. so we again had to stop the study. i feel so bad for the guy he came all the way from breda and he was like it's ok it's not your fault there's nothing you can do and i was like i knowww but why is it always me when these tech issues happen?? the IT guy was on the phone with someone still trying to work it out when we left, idk i hope they fix it bc that will affect all lab users.. we told the guy we'd still pay him and he didnt have to come again but he wants to which is sweet. also like. we have to pay to book the lab which makes sense bc the machine is expensive to maintain and paying for lab time makes sense to me in 99% of cases but i think it's absurd that twice in a week ive had to book someone and then leave because there's a technical issue. like ok if we're paying for lab time i expect the lab to fucking work?
i think my body has now just really fully accepted that they way they act towards me is friendly & that is how they act towards everyone, it just feels so flirty to me but thats ok like it's not ok but it's ok im getting over it now like genuinely everything i feel towards them has been less and less intense it's simply still a very meaningful friendship so i have a bit of trouble disentangling feelings but im moving along. today they braided my hair in a really nice style and i appreciate that. friendshiply.
not blogging a lot lately sorry today i woke up went to the lab had an annoying as fuck problem with the participant (will make a post about that) and left an hour early. i was GOING to spend a few hours at my office then working on my thesis but went over instead to my nothingship's house they had a friend over we hung out it was nice. had a choir gma and then had a coffee outside with friends and talked till 11pm and came home. every day these days is just. nice. and busy so i don't get to blog.

yesterday was good. i got a lot of work done in the morning, had therapy and then a meeting, a talk to attend by my PI and then from a guy who was talking nonsense and my lab tore it to shreds, then i left a bit early bc i didn't want to spend my birthday at 5 hours of meetings.. got groceries and played overcooked with some friends for an hour and then went to choir potluck and rehearsal which was so nice. my friend (you know which one) got me a ring for my birthday... and then we did our usual singing after drinks and so many people had stayed behind due to it being the final rehearsal of the year it was amazing we sang some pieces we neverrrr do including one ive been begging for for months. talked with a friend outside to make plans for friday, and then cycled home with another friend who was telling me about her day. dare i say perfect birthday...
Hello!!! I love your second most recent post, and have been wanting to blend graphic design with illustration in a similar way for awhile, but don't know where to start. Would you mind sharing your process?
thank you!! ohh that's a tough question. the short of it is, i got a degree in illustration and worked soley as an illustrator for like 1-2 years after i graduated before i was forced to pivot to graphic design LOL. so i learned typesetting and digital design on the job out of necessity aka emails & social media...
then i got laid off and worked in the advertising/design agency world for a year. one client/agency i worked with was awesome. and then my last full time job SUCKED ASS...... unfortunately i have to say it did challenge me and i learned a lot and grew as a designer as a result
so sorry to say that was my process for learning graphic design LMAO. but in terms of blending graphic design with illustration, i think it started to come more naturally to me as i worked more with typography. also, my strengths as an illustrator don't lend well to painting full scenes with backgrounds, cool perspective, etc. i tend to think more about composition in terms of shapes, symbolism, grids and borders. i think of an illustration as something that consists of multiple design elements, like i know i want one full body character illustration, one spot illustration in a circle, a decorative foliage border... and i just had to start thinking about how to use typography as a design element. i still wouldn't say i'm very strong at it, but trying to get better!
as always i have a ton of reference for each piece i make. in the corporate life piece im referencing/satirizing the design/tech/advertising industry. so i looked a lot at two agencies whose work i genuinely like, instrument and fisk. especially instrument's campaign for pagerduty LOL if you look at that project you'll see how much of a referential talentless hack i am. two artists whose design/illustration sense i've been looking at a lot lately also are dollgirls and kuru731. especially since they both screenprint/design for screenprinted shirts... i was invited to take part in a screenprinting class and ive been trying to pare my work down to 2-3 colors (really difficult for me).
^collage of references
but yes.. type is hard. design is hard... when i'm designing a composition, i try to think about what i need to be in the piece: what elements need to be in there for the sake of the narrative. what elements need to be there for the sake of composition, color balance, etc. i try to not add decorative elements just for the sake of decoration, but think about what purpose each element is serving, whether that's a story-telling or visual purpose or both. i also was working with some constraints - i wanted it to be a risograph prints, so trying to get it to be 3 colors or less would be ideal. that helps narrow down the color scheme. i find working with some constraints can actually help you be more creative sometimes!
umm also tutorials haha. i use photoshop to draw but had to edit some of the type elements in illustrator using its more robust typography tools. annoying!!
oh also here's some process images for the corporate life piece
^very first doodle i sent to a friend LMAO and then i was like. this could be a sticker. this could be a poster
^i was struggling with the design of the boss makes a dime etc part. at first i had the text in a tall vertical column. but it looks like ass. and then i was like ugh fine ill figure out how to do type on an arc LMAO my graphic design skills...... are very rudimentary....
ANYWAY i'll boil it down to a few things. 1. look at reference and inspiration, look at what your favorite design agencies are doing and figure out what it is you like and how to put your own spin on it 2. think of typography, photography, patterns, etc as design elements of a composition just like illustration and icons are. how can they work together? what narrative are you trying to tell, and how can each element contribute to that story? 3. um..... i wouldn't really recommend designing emails and social media posts even though that's what i did. but posters i love to do! and it's a fun way to incorporate text and illustration together. if you already like drawing fanart, that's a way you can still do fanart and practice design skills at the same time!
also, thanks everyone for the well wishes on the new job! and sorry to everyone who relates....
