So I had my first appointment with a new psychiatrist since moving states, and at one point, he was asking me a series of questions that I think were trying to see if I experienced "classic" manic episodes. One of those questions was, "Do you ever partake in risky sexual behavior?" And I kinda laughed and said no, then clarified that I'm asexual, so there was none of that. The typical response for when I tell a health provider that I'm asexual is for them to ask me what that is, and I explain it, and they awkwardly move on. Sometimes, they already know the basic definition of it and do what I want them to do, which is assume that means no sex ever across the board and once again move on. (To be clear, I'm not sexually active. I'm not lying to my doctors.) This man, however, my new psychiatrist, just looks up and says, "That's nice, but being asexual alone doesn't really tell me anything about your sexual behavior. While many asexual people abstain from sex, not all do. They sometimes still choose to have sex for any number of reasons, and sometimes, they go through phases where they are more likely to choose to do so due to certain hormones or chemical reactions in the brain. Just like they can go through phases where they are less likely to choose to do so. It's different for everybody. And the phases thing can apply to a lot of people regardless of orientation." And like, bitch I KNEW THAT but I wasn't expecting YOU TO KNOW THAT. Now this man thinks I know Jack shit about my own sexuality, but what was I supposed to say? "Oh, sorry. You guys are usually ignorant about my orientation, and I take advantage of that to cut short awkward conversations."????? There's no way. He's a psychiatrist. That's gotta be a red flag for SOMETHING. Anyways, the guy is really chill, and he's doing his best to help me with the fact that my usual medications are now fucked due to a new one that I have to take to treat a new health issue I have going on, but goddamn I wish I hadn't set myself up to have my own orientation mansplained to me. I have no one to blame but myself.
