what's your general opinion of legend of korra? me and my husband just started it (he finally binged the whole avatar series :') so proud) and idk i've watched a couple seasons before this, but i just don't feel as passionate about it as i do last airbender.
I think I feel really similarly to you! I watched Legend of Korra a few years ago in college when it was first coming out, and... there’s a lot of it that I enjoyed greatly because I just generally really enjoy the sheer awesomeness of bending, the acrobatic fighting of the universe, and the worldbuilding (also, I am very into Korra, and also Kuvira). A lot of people didn’t like Korra as a main character, but I liked her a lot. At the same time, though, I agree with the general consensus that it wasn’t nearly as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I can definitely see why it has nowhere near the level of loyalty and popularity that ATLA garners.
Legend of Korra feels like it tries to address very different themes from the Last Airbender, and some of those themes I really enjoy (like Korra dealing with PTSD) while others fall flat for me in their execution (all of season one, especially because I think the Equalists were born of a serious societal disparity that never got addressed in a way I find adequate). I actually really appreciate that Legend of Korra decided to tackle a lot of more personal and societal themes in its main conflicts rather than exclusively save-the-world type stuff, but it didn’t end up landing for me the same way. The writing honestly just didn’t feel as good - it wasn’t necessarily bad, just not ATLA-tier. (Which is a high bar to meet!)
Also, I think it’s pretty weird that a universe that was deliberately inspired by countries like Tibet, China, Japan, and indigenous arctic cultures like the Inuit ended up with Republic City basically being steampunk New York City. Modern shouldn’t be synonymous with Western, and Legend of Korra feels like it dropped the ball on cultural worldbuilding - is there any new part of the Korra universe we’re introduced to that’s half as memorable as, say, Ba Sing Se? Not to me.
i absolutely love your art! it's so soft and clean at the same time ♥ inspiring! what brushes do you use, if you don't mind me asking?
hello!! thank you so much! ( ; ω;) it makes me very happy to hear that!!
The art program I use is Photoshop. I wish I could say my brushes were unique but... they aren’t 😂 They’re mostly just a normal circle brush with different opacity and feather options
My blend brush helps me out a lot when I want to soften things. It's assigned to the smudge tool. I’ll leave that brush setting here if you’re interested! :D

i loved her arch but i just feel like her personality and her relationship with sokka could have gotten more development. everytime she's on screen she just kinda runs away crying about being in an arranged marriage. what are her likes? her dislikes? what does she stand for?
I can really relate to this because that’s actually exactly how I felt about Princess Yue when I was a kid - I was like, she’s pretty, but she’s just always crying and there’s no point to her. Whatevs. Now, though, I have a bit of a different perspective in two ways.
One: I deliberately read her relationship with Sokka based on the emotional cues the show gives me for how it’s meant to be read rather than how I’d feel after knowing someone for so little time. The episodes in the show are short and there’s a lot going on during the seige of the north, so I kinda chose to give ATLA the benefit of the doubt and assume that there’s validity in the emotions that Yue and Sokka are shown as feeling about one another. Personally, I wouldn’t feel so deeply after so little time - but they clearly do.
Two: She stands for doing the right thing even if it hurts her. Yue crying so much felt really weird and unrelatable to me the first time I watched the show - but during my current rewatch, it really moved me, because I saw a girl that just can’t hold in anymore that she’s having an extended emotional breakdown over choosing to sacrifice her freedom to perform the duty she holds for her people, for the entirety of the two episodes she’s in. And then she sacrifices her life to save the moon spirit and dies. The whole time we know her, she is in mourning for what could have been, because she’s been sacrificing her own wants and needs for the good of her tribe since she was little. What are her likes? Well, for one, she likes Sokka - but that doesn’t get to matter. None of her wants really do. She was born to serve her tribe and she lived to seventeen to save the moon spirit, and she never got to be her own person. And it’s not fair, it’s not fair at all... but she’s choosing to do it because she loves her people and thinks it’s important and the right thing to do.
definitely agree with all your points about korra! i actually love korra as a character as well, but honestly i think 100% where they went wrong was the fact that they wrapped up season 1 on the last episode because they didn't know if they were getting another season. the first and next season would have had way more impact if she just didn't have her bending for a while with amon still out there, it was just really sloppy of them to give her bending back as soon as she lost it. (cont.)
(cont.) and as someone that's suffered ptsd, korra resonated with me so hard and i thought they pulled it off in season one so well. but to wrap up the "ptsd" arc in about 10 minutes was a total 180, because ptsd takes take to get over. its really a shame because i definitely saw where they wanted to go with it for the next season. also 100% about the new york city thing, it's so weird to me to see everyone in eastern asain clothes yet its new york city. why not make it tokyo? or hong kong?
Hard agree on all the comments about Republic City - and for sure about the PTSD arc wrap-up. That’s so not how mental health works at all...
I remember reading somewhere that one of the issues Legend of Korra faced was getting jerked around a bit in terms of how many seasons they were going to get. Knowing that makes a lot of the writing pacing weirdness make a lot of sense to me - it’s hard to plan a story when your knowledge about how long it’s going to be is unreliable. It feels to me like both season one’s wrap-up and the PTSD arc wrap-up could have done better pacing-wise for sure, and I wonder if that’s because of meta issues to do with how long the show was planned to be.
