I’ve always wanted to redo this illustration because every time I look at it, I can tell something’s off. Bulma’s head is too small, the pose feels awkward… and yet every time I try to make my version, something ends up off in mine too. XD
Whoever says drawing is relaxing has clearly never tried to find the center of gravity in a pose and failed spectacularly.
Still, I’m not giving up. I learn by observing and by doing, so I’m figuring it out as I go. I’m working on Bulma and Vegeta in separate layers this time, which already feels smarter. (Facial expressions and I are… in ongoing negotiations.)
This is what I have so far. Any pointers are welcome, just please be kind with your critique. I’m leaving the reference image below, along with some process shots in case you spot something I’m missing.
This illustration isn't mine (obviously), it was the reference.
And below are some of the steps before (when I remember to save a file XD)
Continuing to work my long-neglected drawing muscles. I have NO idea what the context of this scene would even be, as I can't imagine Emmrich would be terribly thrilled about being handled this way, but there was this really bizarre and honestly fascinating old illustration I immediately knew I HAD to do a study of:
These men have known each other. Intimately.
I also just get a kick out of gender role reversal. Who's getting swept off their feet NOW?
(I did change the left arm position, and I regret it. I thought it would look more like he was properly startled. Oh well!)

An illustration study of a Charles Gibson piece with characters from my current DND campaign.
I had started this piece over a year ago, but we just had a big revelation with my character Percival (left) about Korov (right) so I went back in and finished it! I need to make a post formally introducing my characters sometime.
Percival belongs to me and Korov belongs to my DM @/bennohammer (on Twitter)
