Starting tomorrow I'll be travelling for a while, so I probably won't be online much for at least two weeks! Feel free to tag me for whatever reason though :)
After two weeks I'll still be abroad for five more, but it'll be less of a travelling situation and more like a studying situation. So I'll probably be back pretty normally by then.
Just had a bowl of fruit for breakfast and as often happens, whenever I have fruit, see fruit, think about fruit, my head goes "fruit, fruit. Tits, tits. Plant plant!"
My laptop screen broke and fixing it is going to take weeks because apparently I have a special screen and the replacement needs to be shipped over from China, but I need to bring it with me to the AIR program and maaan it's probably going to be real close. I've got my fingers so tightly crossed that it's ready before I leave...
So I work at a graphic studio and sometimes I get calls from people/people come in who just don't understand what that means and then get upset at me for being "unhelpful."
Just now a man called me saying "I made a pencil drawing and I want to make a good-looking replica, can you do that for me?" and he admitted that he has no knowledge of graphic techniques whatsoever. I explained politely that the answer is "no, that's not what we do here."
Our studio is a place where graphic artists - people who are skilled at graphic techniques - can use our materials and equipment to make graphic art. Us employees of the graphic studio do not make prints for people. While we do sometimes teach people graphic techniques, I gathered from our conversation that's not what this man had in mind.
I explained what technique might work, but recommended him a print shop as his best option. He got agitated. He just wanted to make a quick, but good looking copy of his pencil drawing (you know, the thing print shops do), and he obviously thought I was being unnecessarily difficult.
He ended the call with something along the lines of "how hard can it be? Whatever."
Sir. What.

My dad died a year and a half ago, and while there's a general (though faint) feeling of absence, the few times I really feel a pang of loss is when I'm out and about and I see an old man (white-haired, balding) that reminds me of him a little. Sometimes I just see his kinda stiff posture in someone or his thoughtful way of talking or a similar clothing style and I just break a little. Especially when they're clearly older than him.
I can get so annoyed by translations lol.
I'm watching a show and someone said the cheesy line: "this is a piece of cake - and as my friends know... I like cake." Something like that. And it got translated to Dutch as "dit is een makkie - en ik hou van makkies" dude. DUDE
I'm not 100% sure but I think "makkie" is a shortened and nounified version of "makkelijk", meaning "easy", so not technically incorrect I GUESS, but that's not the point. The problem is that the proverb "gesneden koek" exists, which literally and figuratively means the same as "piece of cake"!!
My mum sometimes has the weirdest way of processing information. She's reading between the lines when there are no lines to read between.
Me: What happens when I do [x]? Mum: Oh no, don't do that! Just do [y] instead. Me: I'm asking you what happens when I do [x]? Mum: Did you do [x]?? Me: NO I'm asking you what HAPPENS when I do [x]! Mum: [The thing that will happen] Me: Well that doesn't seem too bad. I already did [y] and I'm sure it won't work, so I'm willing to risk it to solve [issue I'm having]. Mum: You asked for my opinion.
