Cat-like eyes stared back at you after you opened your eyes for the first time this morning. Loki pouted, hovering above you expectantly.
“It’s your special day and you’re spending all of it sleeping in?”
If you didn’t know any better, you would assume he was on the verge of tears. “You’re not going to make me fall for your sympathy tricks, but I’ll get up. Just for you,” you laughed and lightly pushed him off of you. “I feel incredibly wounded. Get dressed quick and come to the kitchen, I have a surprise for you!” Loki smirked before sneaking out of the room and leaving you alone with your thoughts.
When Loki said he had a surprise, it was rarely ever anything he could be trusted with, so you were a bit concerned. But surely, he wouldn’t cause a disaster on your birthday. You hoped. The slight sense of concern made you get dressed faster so that you could make it on time.
But more so than disaster, what you saw after entering the kitchen made your heart freeze up on you. Loki was a natural romantic and it was no surprise that he treated you like you were a gift sent from the angels, but it nearly made tears well up in your eyes when you spotted the stunning bouquet of flowers with a plated breakfast sitting on the table. “How long did this take?” You asked.
“An undisclosed amount of time that you absolutely need not know… But I hope you enjoy it,” Loki chuckled as he scratched the back of his neck. He was being humble, but you knew just how much this was and it meant the whole world. You wanted him to know exactly how much you were thankful for him and the things he did for you.
Your legs moved before your mind could even decide that it was moving. You ran towards him, hands immediately melting around his torso. Loki froze up for a moment, but after he fell into your hug, his hands were wrapped around you. “I love you. For so many centuries to come, I’ll continue to keep loving you. Thank you, Loki.”
“It’s just flowers and breakfast, but you’re welcome… I would do it again every single day if you said that you wanted it.”
“It’s not just flowers and breakfast, Loki. It’s your effort and the fact you care, the fact that you’d do all this to celebrate my birthday. Don’t pretend like I didn’t notice the bandaid on your finger the second I walked in.”
He rushed to cover the bandaged finger, but it was already far too late. He frowned and turned to avoid your gaze. “You weren’t supposed to see that.”
“Too bad.” You took his chin in your hands and forced him to face you, “It’s a good thing I know something that’ll make you feel better.”
Before Loki could react, you moved in to kiss him right on the lips. A kiss that was fully unprovoked. It was short-lived, but both of you were stuck with flushed faces and subtle smiles when you pulled away. “You’re right. That made me feel better,” Loki whispered.
You giggled, happy that he wasn’t going to undermine his efforts anymore. Your stomach grumbled as you remembered how good the food looked. Loki pulled out a chair for you before you could even try to sit down, acting incredibly gentlemanly. You wouldn’t force it, but you also wouldn’t mind it if he was so gentlemanly daily. But if he was, it wouldn’t be the silly Loki that you originally fell in love with. You were already happy, at peace with the way things were.
“Enjoy your breakfast, my star,” he grinned, like a kitty who just found a catnip covered toy. He was too late, because you were already shoveling down the food and tea that was in front of you. “What are the flowers?” You asked. It was a white lie, because you actually knew that the flowers were. But it didn’t stop your curiosity in how he would respond to the question.
“Red and yellow dahlias… I collected them on my own.”
“Perseverance and romance, joy and celebration? And they happen to match your eyes? I love them, thank you.”
Loki’s cheeks became rose-red again after you called him out on the flower meanings. He should’ve known that’s exactly what you were going for. But to say the truth, he really didn’t mind.
