On Friday, the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights NGO (IHR) published a fresh estimate of the death toll.

At least 50 people have been killed in protests suppressed by Iranian security forces that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by morality police. This is reported by the news agency AFP.

Iranian authorities said last Friday that 22-year-old Amini had died after being arrested for wearing a hijab incorrectly. Amin's death quickly led to protests in which several people died, according to various human rights organizations.

The purpose of the demonstrations is to oppose the forced use of headscarves by women and the extrajuridical actions of the morality police.

Oslo-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) said on Friday that the death toll has continued to rise after six people were killed in fire by security forces in the city of Rezvanshahr in northern Gilan province on Thursday evening. The rest of the reported deaths were recorded in the northern Iranian cities of Babol and Amol.

After the death of Mahsa Amini, there have been demonstrations in about 80 Iranian cities.

According to AFP, the protests that began in the aftermath of Amini's death are among the most serious seen in Iran since November 2019.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi told on Thursday evening (UTC+3) that Amini's death is "being investigated", but added that the investigation into the cause of death does not indicate the use of police violence. In addition, Raisi accused the demonstrators of causing chaos.

The Iranian government has tried to curb the enthusiasm of the protesters, for example by restricting Iranians' access to the internet.
