Bago pa man tuluyang masakop ng mga Hapon ang Pilipinas noong April 9, 1942, isa si Heneral Douglas MacArthur sa mga namuno sa mga sundalo ng Amerika at Pilipinas sa tangway ng Bataan. Ngunit sa pag-uutos ng Presidente ng Estados Unidos na si Pres. Franklin Roosevelt ay kaniyang nilisan ang Pilipinas at nangakong babalik upang iligtas ito sa pananakop ng mga Hapon.

Sa kanyang pagbabalik ay nabawi ng alyansa ng mga sundalo ng Pilipinas at Amerika ang tangway ng Bataan.
