With all the hype and news surrounding the Shatter me Movie/TV show, I have to say while I’m excited for it and to see who they cast for Aaron Warner and Juliette Ferrars, I hate all this gatekeeping of “I read the books first!” Or “the TT girlies better not claim that they love Aaron in the first movie when they haven’t read the books” etc. I’m a very visual person. When I write, it’s a movie! Am I the only one who hates that?
Let me make this clear. You guys who haven’t read the books, DO NOT get to have my man Aaron Warner when the movies come out.

See, NO, if people start watching shows or films that are based off of books (Shatter Me, Boys of Tommen, etc) and they start giving HOT TAKES, they aren’t ALLOWED to. Like deeming a certain ship toxic or true love or hating on certain characters and calling them assholes, NO NO NO DON’T. What books do is they offer you an individual perspective and insight on backstories, thoughts and feelings that YOU DON’T GET IN MEDIA and therefore you won’t be ABLE to fully grasp what the relationship is LIKE. I've only read the first book of shatter me so this will just be about world building and writing, and I was wondering about your views on it Personally i think its good but overhyped, i love her metaphors and the vision for the future if humans keep destroying our planet particularly this one " Animals were so desperate for food they were willing to eat anything and people were so desperate for food they were willing to eat poisoned animals. We were killing ourselves by trying to stay alive."
Unpopular Opinion but I loved the first book, and for this exact reason.
The first book had a strong foundation in explaining what the world looked like, but it didn't tell us explicitly why it was like that. Who causes it? How was this government elected? was it done by force? how did things slowly become like this? The quote you have used is a good example of Mafi showing us what the world looks like, her downfall is that she stops there and doesn't go deeper in. The world building stops in the first book, the rest of the series is more focused on the romance aspect and not the dystopia. I had a list of questions such as:
How did Paris Anderson get into power? How did he become the way he was?
Why did the RE choose to keep specific languages such as English, Arabic, Swahili, Russian etc. Why did others get destroyed?
How did they decide what books to keep and what to burn? Same thing with historical artefacts
If the world is a wasteland, where do they get food? How do crops survive? what about livestock?
How is Warner having such a massive wardrobe? How are they getting the material to manufacture the clothing?
Adam tells use the English language is going to be erased, what is going to be the new language?
How did all the countries get divided into sectors? What goes on in the Capitol?
How do people function in this society without culture, religion, language or any sense of individuality?
How did people start to get power? (Juliette with her lethal touch, Kenji with his invisibility etc.)
None of these questions were answers, based on my memory. And that is what made the series bad to me, Mafi presented a fantastic idea but executed it very poorly.
In terms of writing, I didn't mind it in the first book because we are in the head of a girl who has been locked up for close to a year. But as the series progressed the purple prose was starting to get very repetitive and irrelevant. I would have liked it if as the series progressed, Juliette's maturity progressed as well. Leading to the writing ultimately maturing.
