#JackedKirby - Just how SAVAGE is the Savage Land? 🦖🦕🐘 Even though the X-Men wasn’t the gangbusters best seller that FF, Spidey and the Avengers were right out of the gate doesn’t mean it without its merits... there were still some really key moments in Marvel Comics history that came from those first 15-20 issues that Jack was primarily a part of (as both penciled and layout artists) before stepping aside from the title. One of those moments has to be #Issue10 (published in March of 1965) when Jack & Stan introduced Ka-Zar, Sabu and The Savage Land!!! 🦕🦖🐘 Ka-Zar, aka Kevin Plunder, is a rehash if the typical “Tarzan” jungle man trope... English upper class family who die on an expedition to The Savage Land under the ice in Antarctica and he is left to fend for himself. He is found by Zabu, a Sabre tooth tiger that has above human intelligence due to a mutation (Pic 1). He grows to become the self crowned “Ruler of the Savage Land” and is first discovered by the visiting X-Men... 🦕🦖🐘 The Savage Land itself is pretty amazing... it’s like a jungle paradise filled with prehistoric monsters, not traditional dinosaurs and mutated creations from Jack’s wild mind. In this one issue we see numerous creatures in all their glory... we get pterodactyls (pic 2), miniature horses (pic 3), a wingless bird battlehorse hybrid (pic 4), green man apes (pic 5), a brontosaurus (Pic 6), Lizard Men (Pic 7), a Tyrannosaurs Rex (Pic 8) and charging Woolly Mammoths (Pic 9)!!!! All in one issue... amazing! 🦕🦖🐘 For pic 10 I posted the original cover... which is a classic illustration of Ka-Zar pouncing into battle with the X-Men. I love the colors and layout of this cover, as well as the bubble of Zabu on the cover.
