Valencia’s Bullring or Plaza de Toros de Valencia was built between 1850 and 1859 in the neoclassical style, inspired by civil Roman architecture such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Arena of Nîmes (France). - This Colosseum look-alike structure is located next to the North railway station. Designed by Sebastián Monleón Estellés, it has 17.65 metres high and the ring itself is 52 metres in diameter. The bullring holds around 12,000 people. La Plaza de la Virgen (Valencian: Plaça de la Mare de Déu) is an old little square that dates back to the Roman times in Valencia. This square is bounded by three of Valencia’s most emblematic buildings – the Cathedral of Santa Maria (right), the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados (left), and the Palace of the Generalitat (not visible in the picture). - One of the square’s main attractions is probably its elaborate fountain, depicting Neptune surrounded by eight naked women. The façade of Valencia Cathedral, interestingly features the Jewish Star of David on top of the main door. The site has been used several times for religious structure, as the cathedral was built over the site of the former ancient Visigothic cathedral, which under the Moors (Moeslims) had been turned into a mosque. - Valencian Gothic is the predominant architectural style of the cathedral, although it also contains Romanesque, French Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical elements. The Serrans Gate (Puerta de Serranos) or Serrans Tower (Torres de Serranos) is one of the twelve gates that formed part of the ancient city wall, the Christian Wall (Muralla cristiana), of the city of Valencia, Spain. It was built in Valencian Gothic style at the end of the 14th century. The gate is one of the main the entry point for the royal road to Barcelona. It is an important landmark and one of the best preserved monuments of Valencia. - Of the ancient city wall, which was pulled down in 1865 on the orders of the provincial governor Cirilio Amorós, only the Serrans Towers is one of the structure that have survived. The Torres de Serrans were built in the 14th century, 1392, by Pere Balaguer. It was the main entrance to the city and it was originally built with a defensive function.
