shitty character breakdown of simon the convict ig
something i don’t like is the way a lot of ppl make simon very stoic in fanfics as if he was at ALL stoic in the movie the only bits i can think of is at like the very beginning when he’s entering the ocean and he’s understandably over it and already wants to leave. even that doesn’t last long bc he immediately starts trying to get his captors’ attention once he notices the depth level has dropped into the red zone.
i also dislike the common trope that he’s quick to anger and that his go-to way of expressing any negative emotion is anger. he’s angry and upset a few times in the movie but from what i noticed it’s almost ALWAYS preceded by others’ being rude, disregarding his valid concerns and fears, and being trapped in a frustrating, confusing situation that he has CONTINUALLY TRIED AND FAILED to find a reasonable and safe solution for. ‘oh he yells at ava after he comes up for the first time!!’ yeah after ava continued to ignore his fears surrounding returning to the blood ocean due to there being something alive down there (SOMETHING HE WAS CORRECT ABT MIND YOU) and dehumanized/dismissed him to the nth degree. he only acts angry when he feels like a trapped animal who has no other solution.
if anything, i’d say his go-to reaction to being in a new or confusing situation is to remain calm and be communicative. the skeleton is gone? he takes further photos with the radiation camera to confirm his findings and then reports back to COI. he’s informed that he has to ram the skeleton at full speed? he takes deep breaths and summons his courage whilst confirming several times that yes, he’s supposed to ram it; yes, ramming it will attach the skeleton to the submarine; and yes, getting this skeleton should mean freedom, however temporary.
he’s smart and resourceful and he grew up on a ship where there weren’t many people left and he likely had to get along with plenty of people he didn’t particularly like in a close proximity (something i’ve inferred from his references/the bits we see and hear of his past often containing others’ yelling at him or him disagreeing with those around him (insisting that the stars/planets are still alive and his refusal to take part in whatever happened to filament station + his attempts to stop it). he’d understand that the most rational thing to do in these situations is to calm down and try his best to understand/be understood through clear communication.
not to mention i’m like. pretty sure his flight or fight response tends closer to flight or fawn. he discovers the eel? he doesn’t WANT to fight it. he wants to get away and live. ava and the others in COI are upset at him for irradiating jack? he immediately apologizes, backs away, looks visibly shaken, TRIES TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF. he is not violent by nature. he said it himself, ALL HE WANTS TO DO IS LIVE.
