I would like to hear everyone's favourite book featuring a disabled character!

and if you don't have one, I want you to follow this post or go do some research and find one to read!

disabled people get left out of diversity recommendations a lot, which is ridiculous given that we intersect with every other marginalisation possible. so today, we are going to do something about that

I'll start by recommending two books because I can never just suggest one book 🤭

The Degenerates by J Albert Mann is my ultimate disability rec because it's based on actual disabled history and shines an important light on how we've been treated - and in some places how we're still treated

Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White is also getting recommended because I just can't stop thinking about it. but also because two of its leads are disabled, both with facial differences and neurodivergences

December 3 is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. This day promotes an understanding of disability issues, and mobilizes support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of people with disabilities. We're big into this kind of support - it's one of the principles (perhaps the most crucial principle!) upon which our event was founded. Accessibility - true accessibility - is so much more than wheelchair ramps and alt text on webpage images. We encourage everybody to learn more. To that end, we're highlighting some terrific relevant resources, including resources related to the fibre arts, and some links to help you search for makers with disabilities.

1 in 5 people are disabled, and most are invisible impairments. Be kind, be careful with your words and be accepting. There is a lot of ableism and stigma in society for people who identify as disabled to look or act a certain way, but disability is a spectrum, it's fluid and comes in a variety of severeness.
