I've been without a craft project for a couple of days (unsure where to go with Fair Isle ideas & would need to buy yarn for it anyway, full of sewing ideas but without functional machine) but now I've got a couple of sock knitting ideas that are burning holes in my brain & there's no solution but to test them out.
Stranded socks with a checkerboard/very simple pattern on the bottom of the foot would be double thick in all the parts that wear thin/see a lot of stress (well, and everywhere else too, but still). I fear the lack of stretch, but I'd get to do more FI stuff without the commitment of a big project, and could use up some supposed sock yarns I have that are really a little too thin.
Toe up socks w/Judy's Magic Cast On are where it's at, but I don't like that I can feel the line of increases up each side of the toe. I've tried using different increases and may try some others, but also I want to play with spreading the increases out more (from the sides - how far apart can they go & maintain that tapered envelope shape?) or distributing them across multiple locations (rounded toe? just staggering them?) and I bet there are other possibilities. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has ideas on this subject.
Detailsdetails: - Lifted increases in the toe are probably my least favored option, because they pull yarn from the lower row and make it tighter - Make one is similar - Yarn over & ktbl in the next row is good, but it's a balancing act btw not doing it too tight (feelable line) and leaving a little hole. - Knit front & back I just don't like. It's ugly, and the variation where you just slip the back seems like it would decrease stretch, but is it feelable? Must test. - Are there other increases in the world? Must google. Double ones are probably all gonna be bulky. - What if the toe was worked inside out? How would that feel? Hm. Ideas.
