Okay so I know that this is gonna sound like the usual "haha he's so me I'm super depressed" shtick but that's not it I promise. Simon Petrikov reminds me a lot of me in Middle School tm. When I was younger I would always think about the perfect partner and what I would do when I found that person. I made a list of every trait I wanted and the necessary amount of those traits a person had to have for me even to consider dating them. I called myself a hopeless romantic. I desperately wanted the relationships I saw on tv or read in books, but I had no clue what a real relationship looked like.

But how does this remind you of Simon?

Simon was never looking for love he was an academic. That was before he met Betty. Simon met the person who unknowingly checked off everything on his list. She had read his research, she was an amazing outdoors woman, and she was incredibly insightful. When Simon finally got together with Betty he didn't even think of going on the bus with her to the Outback because she was perfect for him. Not the other way around.

Simon and Betty didn't work out because Simon was so focused on Betty being the perfect partner. When we first see him in Fionna and Cake he is completely love sick and grieving. He cannot possibly connect to the other people of Ooo because he desperately wants that perfect partner back. Kinda like me in middle school minus the partner.

I imagine that if I had gotten that dream partner I wanted in Middle School tm, I probably would've neglected them in the same way Simon did. I probably would've been caught up in seeing this idealized person in front of me and not worrying about if I was meeting their needs because they were meeting all of mine.

Tldr; Simon is just a love sick middle schooler who couldn't understand that relationships are a two way street, and that's very relatable.
