[ALBUM] DPR LIVE - IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?

DPR Live’s first full length effort shows lightyears worth of growth in his short hiatus; ‘Is Anybody Out There’ is a succinctly crafted, narrative-driven record that sees Live drawing from rich influences accross pop and hip-hop. Where his prior work showed a unique flair for songwriting with bright pop and contemporary influences, ‘IAOT’ shoots these influences into the stratosphere, with back to back tracks which are not only linked by an engrossing narrative of self-discovery, freedom and love, but also through deeply realized, and meticulously arranged production. Live’s performances are chameleon-like over the record’s instrumentals, as he commands each song with a sense of total ownership and comfort; delivering performances that range from emotive to chaotic to sharp to unapologetic confidence. DPR Live’s ‘IAOT’ marks a potentially monumental moment for Korean rap, as he delivers a record that incorporates, yet also transcends trends; forming one of the most distinctive and immediately memorable records that Korean Hip-Hop has seen in recent years.

[ALBUM] LOOPY - NO FEAR

After an extended run of singles, Loopy returns with a new full-length effort with ‘No Fear’, trailing the surprisingly poor ‘Loofla’ collaborative record last year. ‘No Fear’ demonstrates that Loopy’s innate charisma as a rapper/singer can only carry him so far, as the considerably bloated 21-song tracklist is a struggle to complete. For a great deal of the record, the production is trite at best and the processing on Loopy’s vocals are occasionally dialed up to near unbearable levels. Loopy comes off as nothing if not, complacent on ‘No Fear’; his selection in instrumentals and his overall vision (or lack thereof) going into this album. ‘No Fear’ does have flashes in the pan, namely the electric opener ‘Gear 2020′, the titular track and ‘Neo Seoul Love’, a moody synth-pop ballad with Baek Yerin among a handful of others. ‘No Fear’ is a stagnant record, both in terms of its presentation and in terms of what it represents for Loopy as an artist. Despite a handful of energetic performances and catchy hooks, Loopy’s ‘No Fear’ is his weakest showing yet as a lead artist.
