*cracks knuckles* This boy. 

I know a lot of people hate this character. He’s ‘too stiff’, ‘too much of a jerk’, or they just can’t find it in themselves to welcome yet another Robin into their hearts, or whatever. I’ve heard a lot of reasons.

But Damian Wayne is honestly one of my absolute favorites. 

He’s what happens when a little kid is placed under Atlas-like amounts of pressure. The expectations of his family–both sides, in fact–have been crushing this boy from the moment he was born, and it’s hardened him into a person that doesn’t really work well with others. 

I love how his writers have taken traits you’d find in a normal child or pre-teen, and tailored/amplified them to fit Damian’s character. 

Kids are desperate to please and prove themselves–

Kids are insecure–

Kids seek validation and respect, something not often given freely by older siblings or parents–

And many kids have a fixation on ‘fairness’, or making things equal for everyone (i.e. It’s not fair that so and so gets this and I don’t!)–

Damian’s just a kid who’s crying out for validation from the people he most loves. The sad thing is that he’s been taught all his life that the only way to do this is to pass everyone else up and be the best. 

I’m glad that we’re seeing more positive relationships between Damian and other characters–

I’d hate it if he were only written off as the mini-version of Batman, with all the grumpiness and ego that entails (Bruce’s character assassination is a rant for another day, alas).
