The Original Multiple Final Piece
60 laser print images
I am so pleased with the outcome presentation of my final piece. I think it communicated modern consumerism and market culture, and the pressure and competition of modern consumerism. I think the selection of photographs I used communicated this really well by showcasing examples of consumerism around me.
For my final piece I wanted to recreate my own version of Martin Parr’s Common Sense. I decided to use market culture and modern consumerism as my main focus points for my final piece.
I used a digital camera for these photos because I felt it worked best with communicating the modern aspects of consumerism. In these photos I wanted to communicate the competition of market culture and the constant need for attention from the owners. I wanted to show all the in your face aspects of consumerism that there is around us, evidencing repetition and patterns, colours and methods that make us intrigued into buying the products.
I want to display them closely together with a lot of photographs and overwhelm people with colour because that’s how consumerism has effected me.
I wanted to experiment with a film camera because I loved the outcomes from Martin Parr’s Common Sense and film photography is a method I have never used before.
I learned how to use the camera properly, along with the settings etc. I really like the film camera outcomes, I think the effect it gives the photograph is beautiful. I like how i can manipulate the aperture etc and i like how it gives me more freedom than the disposable camera which I preferred the outcome better in comparison to the photographs I took on my phone.
These are just a few of the pictures i took using the Pentax5000 35mm film camera.
During my time in Brixton for reportage drawing, I went to Brixton market to photograph the market culture. I experimented with patterns, repetition and colours for these photographs to show the consumption and competition within the market culture. I wanted to use my research of market culture as inspiration for experimental photos in this project.
I love the colours and patterns on some of these photographs and I think the bright colours and intriguing.
I used my phone camera for these experiments which allowed me to work with more freedom compared to the disposable camera. The phone camera allowed me to be selective and edit the photos I had taken, I had the freedom to take as many photos as I like and felt there was more room for experimentation using this method.

For my first set of experimental photography i used a disposable camera. Firstly, because the experiments were quick and easy to create. I like the unknown attached to this method because you can't see what they look like until they have been developed. I really love the outcome and how spontaneous they are.
I focused my attention on observing what was around me for these experiments. I wanted to observe behaviour in the town centre, look at different types of consumerism such as shops, social areas, but mainly these experiments were to test the quality of the imagery, and see if i wanted to take it further.
