Photos Chronicling Impact of Highway Construction Now Online
When the freeways cut through Minneapolis in the 1960s and β70s, hundreds of residents and businesses were displaced and houses and buildings were demolish. Inspectors from the old Minnesota Department of Highways (now the Minnesota Department of Transportation) photographed these houses and buildings, recording building details and even floor plans for many of them. These records were created chiefly for valuation purposes, but they provide a fascinating glimpse into our lost history.
The records were eventually deaccessioned by the Highway Department and released to local governing agencies, including Hennepin County. The County, in turn, donated them to the Hennepin History Museum. Hennepin County Library Special Collections is again partnering with the Museum to digitize this collection. Over two thousand photographs of houses and buildings from the I-94 and Hiawatha Avenue corridors have been loaded to the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections so far. Documents and additional photos will be added later in the fall and winter.

Minneapolis on this day 4 years ago in 2020: 646 were arrested in the largest mass arrest in Minnesota state history. Multiple marches merged into one group before entering I-94 in protest of then President Trump's threats to challenge the results of the election.
Protesters demanding democracy march from Downtown Minneapolis and Cedar/Riverside onto I-94.646 arrests were made in what is likely the largest mass arrest/citation event in city history.
