there’s this quote in the fault in our stars that goes something like “sometimes you read a book and it fills you with a weird evangelical zeal and you become convinced that every problem in the world would be solved if only everyone read this book.” i have read a few such books, but they’re few and far between. there are five star books and books that make me flap my arms around while i yell about them and even books that make me feel like i’m flying a little bit.
none of those books are the ones john green was talking about. i’ve read a few— maybe three?— in my life. the books that i sit down afterwards and feel quiet about. the books i drop into the lap of the person who suggested it to me or the person i most want to talk to me about it. the books that leave me sitting and thinking and having to remember how to breathe because every time i start thinking about it i forget to.
those books are:
- the book thief by markus zusak
- turtles all the way down by john green
- anxious people by fredrik backman
i have just finished the third book in this list after getting it for my mom for christmas last year. i am flabbergasted that it sat in my house for a year, untouched. i read it in about two hours and she’s reading it now while i sit and stew and occasionally burst into tears about something that wasn’t sad.
this book took a fundamental part of me and turned it sideways, rotated it until it snapped into place, and i don’t think i can turn it back to where it used to be. i feel like a different person than i was two hours ago. i don’t know WHAT is different but it IS.
anyhow y’all should read it
I deserve financial compensation every time I have to read a post that posits that Jason is actually the good big brother that's there for his siblings and Dick is the big mean golden child that can do whatever he wants and turns his siblings away when they need help. I'd have like a gajillion dollars now.
This bothers me so much specifically because it's the exact opposite of canon, in Dick's case anyway. Ain't nobody going to Jason for help in the first place. I really can't get past the backwards logic of it all. No, the utter lack of logic. Like it's the Exact Opposite.... The Exact Opposite!!! How did you come to this conclusion???
Well, I mean, I know- you don't read the comics AND you take everything at face value. I get it, when I first entered the fandom- the way people talk about Dick and Jason and Tim and Damian? They'd have you believe that Jason and Tim were delivered to Earth by angels with a chorus singing in the heavens and a light following them everywhere their delicate, innocent feet went. Everything they do is either Justified or Morally Correct. Nothing is Ever Their Fault. They deserve your sympathy and awe, and nothing short of worship is an attack on their character. They'd have you believe that Dick is a Monster, that Everything is his fault, that he's an inherently bad and selfish person because He Tried but He Didn't Devote Himself Entirely to Jason and Tim and Thats Bad and He Deserves To Be Punished For It and that Damian is a Demon, that he's always going to make the choice that serves himself and hurts others, that even though he's a 10 year old boy with a complicated, abusive upbringing, Everything is His Fault Entirely and He Doesn't Deserve Understanding or Mercy.
That's what you see and hear when you enter this fandom. And unless you actually read the comics or do the research by looking through blogs with meta commentary on the comics (with panels provided) or interact with fan media that is based on the comics And Not The Fanon- this is the false opinion that remains.
It drives me crazy that people refuse to engage with the actual canon of something they claim to be a fan of. What are you a fan of if you have no idea what you're talking about? It drives me crazy, because theres so much of this fanon content, you have to literally dig and dig and dig and dig and dig and dig to find the truth. And the truth is so Unbelievably, Undeniably
Not That.
In fact, in most cases whatever you read- the opposite is what actually happened. Or what you read is Entirely Made Up to make one character, (Dick and Damian), look bad in order to prop up the other character, (Jason and Tim). Then people get angry when you point that out, for ruining 'the fun' or their false perception of their fave character. Well I'm angry for having to do it in the first place.
Enid: "WHAT?! WEDNESDAY COULD STAY LIKE THIS FORVER!!"
Thing: *signs* "Nice going Ajax. Really ruining the wenclair dream right now"
Yoko: "Maybe we can take her to the infirmary to get help"
AHHHHHH HAPPY BIRTHDAY CASS APOCALYPTIC SERIES
This show has seriously been amazing. Rise of the TMNT has been one of my recent hyperfixations, but definitely my top one. In late 2022 I was in a really bad place mentally, plus my favorite show The Owl House was ending soon. Then comes May 2023.
And my life legit changed
I just love the cast and characters so much, Donnie being amazing autistic rep and Leo being Ben’s turtlesona and Mikey’s razzmatazz and Raph kicking ass LIKE A BOSS
The movie emotionally wrecked me and it’s literally what inspired me to pick up my book again and give a try at animating.
Now I have a major to study. I have a fandom that’s so amazing and supportive. And then I found Cass. Their story, telling the turtle’s tale in the future, the angst ride, the STORYTELLING
It blows my mind that one person created an entire world basically every Rise fan considers canon. I truly think that it’s the C.A.S. that made me love RotTMNT as much as I did. The family bond, the love and strength they share, the hope. The relationships between characters, the arcs, the ACTUAL FUCKING MUSIC I HEAR IN MY HEAD WHEN SOMETHING COOL AS SHIT HAPPENS
I cannot put into words how much I love this series. I had fanart ready but the perks of having two nosy younger siblings and a “delete” button ready to push… so I hope this can suffice for now.
@somerandomdudelmao, you are seriously amazing. Thank you for doing all you can do create this wonderful masterpiece for us, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. You’re so cool!

like imagine being thrown into worldwide stardom because when you were 16 your family encouraged you to audition for a singing competition and now you’re 28 and more famous than you have ever been in your life which at times seems impossible and through all of the success there is still this feeling deep down of never being enough and waiting for the day that people get bored of you and slowly stop tuning in to check for your or your talents…
