I just had my second ER trip of the month. I thought the amitriptyline was making my heart weird in a non-POTSy way and I had a feeling that something was just wrong. So I woke Mothman up and asked him to take me to the ER.

Which is just as well because as soon as we got there I started experiencing uncontrollable muscle spasms and my resting heart rate shot up to 150.

The triage nurse bolted me through the corridors into a room of about four doctors and seven nurses. The rest is a blur but I remember crying for Mothman because I couldn't see him past the wall of medical people around me.

Turns out I was extremely hypocalcemic, as in my blood results for my ionized calcium levels were so low it was a medical emergency. If I’d stayed home and assumed my rapid heart was from POTS I likely would have had a seizure or possibly a heart attack.

The doctor in charge told me he’d only ever seen the spasmodic movements I was making in textbooks before, but it was so distinctive he knew right away it was hypocalcemia. Blood tests confirmed it. My serum levels were “normal” but my ionozed levels were virtually zero.

Also, my thyroid is shot. I need to get more tests done. Possibly linked to the hypocalcemia. Possibly why my migraines have been so bad. Basically it was the b12 fiasco all over again. All my test results looked normal until I almost died

Again.

Anyway. I’m home now after being given a massive dose of IV calcium and a ton of othe meds. Sadly, I’m not allowed to take the amitriptyline anymore, at least until we’ve figured out my thyroid and why my calcium was so low while still appearing normal. Thankfully I was only on it for a week at a very low dose so the side effects of coming off it cold turkey shouldn't be too bad. I’m dreading the head pain returning. But who knows, maybe the massive dose of calcium will help with that. Keep your fingers crossed for me, eh?

Story:

She knew she was young to have a kit.

Too young.

Her son was weak, she was weak, and everyone and their littermate knew it, so why did cats keep rubbing it in her face?!

“Do you know how old you are, Ivy?” Lionthroat, the old punk of a healer, had asked as he looked her over from a safe distance.

“You’re awful small. Little brittlebones, eh?” said by Redmallow, the old grumpy red tom, as he basked in the sun.

“Better eat enough to grow up properly!” said by Bearshake, the bastard deputy who refused to believe that she was 14 moons old.

“I can nurse him if you can’t make enough milk” Inkshine had told her. The black queen whose passiveness was made worse when Wobble ended up preferring her to his own mother!

Insult by insult, they built until something snapped.

The first to go was Lionthroat. She’d honestly expected to be caught then and there, with how much he thrashed. But she got away with it! In his own den!

Next was Redmallow. The poor old tom just couldn’t hold his foxglove.

Bearshake was difficult. She tried for moons, only to find that, where she went, he usually followed to “keep her out of trouble." Who knew that her little body kept her out of sight so well? Bearshake didn’t see her, and neither did the badger that got him.

Then it was Inkyshine’s turn. The queen tucked Wobblekit against another queen, and followed Ivyburble to her death. But first, she said something that made Ivyburble see red.

“I hope your life gets better after this.”

She snapped Inkyshine’s neck, and returned to camp.

She didn’t want to eat.

Her mouth hurt more and more, as Wobble got bigger. Soon he was larger than her!

But she got smaller.

Weaker.

Everyone and their littermate knew it.

Well, well, well....if it isn't my life long enemy, severe hypocalcemia posing as a mental illness again, turning my brain to mush and every other part of my body that requires Ca to function properly.

How could i forgot i was threatened with hospitalization (if i don't rest in bed at home that is) and given calcium injections before when I went to my doctor with kinda the same symptoms. And when i also had severe dehydration along with it, fainted and hit my head they asked me if I don't have epilepsy lol.

Apparently symptoms of hypocalcemia are different depending on person, meaning from the general set associated with it some may be more expressed than others, and can include symptoms associated with several mental illnesses. My hypocalcemia is most expressed at nervous system level, but also on nails, skin, hair, teeth, not so much as muscle cramps which i have more rarely.
