Aquarium Accessories Beginners Should Actually Spend Money On!
Looking for the best beginner aquarium accessories that are actually worth spending your money on? Here's a breakdown of budget-friendly gear I personally use and recommend after lots of trial and error in my own tanks.
Lighting: Two awesome budget lights that grow beginner-friendly plants with ease are the Seaoura SR616 and the Hygger HG58. The Seaoura gives off a warm, yellowish tone—great for bringing out reds and oranges. The Hygger is cooler and more blue-toned—perfect for greens and blues. Both lights can even support some medium to advanced aquatic plants.
Filtration: For nano tanks, I really like the Nicrew Slim Hang-on-Back filter. It’s compact and quiet, but I recommend swapping the media for foam and filter floss for better performance. If you're running a shrimp tank or a small to medium setup, the USB-powered Hygger sponge filter is a fantastic choice—no air pump required and baby shrimp-safe.
Heaters: My go-to is the Fluval T Series heater. It’s super accurate, reliable, and has never let me down.
Water Conditioner: Keep it simple and affordable with API Tap Water Conditioner. It handles chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals—everything most tanks need.
Fish Food: I rotate between Fluval Bug Bites (green label for bottom feeders, blue label for small fish) and Hikari Micro Pellets. Both are nutritious, safe, and my fish absolutely love them.
Water Testing: Don’t skip this! A liquid test kit is essential. I recommend the API Master Test Kit—great value and helps you monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH so you can catch problems before they get serious.
✅ Whether you're just starting out or upgrading your setup, these aquarium accessories offer great performance without breaking the bank.

Looking for a cheap Hygger light for your planted tank? In this video, I review the Hygger HG058 aquarium light and share my experience using it. This full-spectrum LED is an affordable option designed for planted aquariums, but it also works well as a general display light.
For transparency, Hygger sent me this light for free and provided a discount code for US residents, which includes free shipping (details below). However, I’ve purchased several Hygger lights over the years and have always been happy with their performance, so I was excited to test this one.
The Hygger HG058 aquarium light has an extendable design, allowing it to fit tanks from 30 to 137 cm (12 to 54 inches). As a full-spectrum light, it combines white, red, green, and blue LEDs to support plant growth while keeping power consumption low. Unlike some budget lights that rely only on white LEDs, this setup provides a more balanced spectrum for healthier plants.
A standout feature of this cheap Hygger light is its built-in timer, offering 6-, 8-, and 12-hour settings. Many budget lights default to 10-hour timers, which aren’t always ideal for planted tanks. Most planted aquariums do best with 6-8 hours of light per day, so having these options makes it a better fit for a variety of setups. Some aquarists use the DLI method (Daily Light Integral), running lights for 12 hours at reduced intensity to encourage growth while limiting algae.
Brightness is adjustable in 10% increments, allowing for customization based on your tank’s needs. Setup is simple—just choose your intensity, set the timer, and the light will follow a 24-hour cycle, automatically turning on and off at the same time each day.
I tested the Hygger HG058 on my new planted tank with Anubias Petite, Anubias Nano Coin, and Amazon Frogbit, and all the plants have been thriving. This light is ideal for easy-category plants and could potentially support some medium-category species with an 8-hour photoperiod and CO2 injection.
Compared to its closest competitor, the Seaoura SR616, the Hygger HG058 aquarium light offers better timer settings. Nicrew’s ClassicLED Gen 2 lacks a 6-hour timer option, making the Hygger a better choice for low-tech tanks.
If you're a beginner setting up a planted tank, this cheap Hygger light is an excellent choice. It provides enough power for easy plants, and when used properly, algae shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll be using this light in future nano tanks, as it delivers great value for the price.
Thanks for watching! Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Here’s my quick review of the Hygger 957 aquarium light after nearly a year of use across multiple tanks (40 gal, two 29 gals, and an 8 gal).
Its sleek design, adjustable supports, and easy setup make it super convenient.
Plus, it’s durable—I’ve accidentally submerged it a few times and it still works great!
This full-spectrum LED light (white, blue, red, green) is fantastic for plant growth.
You can use preset day/night cycles or customize up to 8 time slots with DIY mode to fine-tune brightness and photoperiods.
I’ve found the timer settings helpful in controlling algae by adjusting light intensity.
Under the Hygger 957, plants like Rotala rotundifolia show vibrant pink hues.
It’s powerful enough for medium to some high-light plants and doesn’t overheat, even after hours of use.
Best of all, it’s competitively priced for the quality you get.
Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade their aquarium lighting setup!

This compact heater is perfect for nano tanks, as its easy to set up, and ideal for beginners.
Just submerge the heating element, plug it in, and set your target temperature on the control unit – a few clicks and you're all set. 🎛️
It automatically switches between active and idle modes to keep the water at your desired temperature.
In my 8-gallon (30L) betta tank, the heater fits perfectly behind the filter intake, keeping everything neat and hidden.
Even with calcium dosing for my shrimp, there's no buildup on the heating element! 🐟
After six months of use and owning multiple units, this heater has been reliable, maintaining a steady temperature to keep my betta happy and healthy.
