Bells Airplanes and hydrofoils. Bell worked extensively on these technologies. He seemed to be behind the curve on the development of airplanes, and was distracted by work on large kites. By the time he started making planes the techology had advanced so far that a tinkerer like Bell couldn't compete. His work on hydrofoils looked interesting, but never really caught on.
