The Amur runs a race to the sea

Okhotsk waits patiently, taking her in

And deep in the night, floating on silently,  

Three men cast their eyes o’er the side of a skiff

Not a one of them dares make a sound

They drift with the current for most of the way

Three jail cells waiting, if they should be found

But if they succeed, it’s a hell of a pay

The water churns, inky and cold

The skiff is a speck in a vast, writhing sea

They paddle away from the shore

And something is following farther beneath

One man keeps a hand on the wheel

The others begin to make ready the lines

The first cast sets to spinning the reel

And from this point it’s only a matter of time

They mightn’t have noticed if not for keen eyes

But these men have poached for kaluga before

If there’s one thing they know, it’s a fish taking line

One of them takes up the rod in his hands

Of the three, he is blessed with superior strength

The hook has been set, and he tries to reel in

But try as he might, she continues to take

They are warring for hours on end

The captain is screaming to cut the damn line

But fishermen never learn how to let go

He can’t bear to lose her, he’s made up his mind

Suddenly she takes a dive for the deep

The skiff starts to dip its bow under the waves

It happens so quickly, there’s no time to weep

She’s taking them back to from whence she first came
