It turns out huckleberries are a bit more complicated than I had initially researched them to be. I had read they do well in partial to full shade and took that as gospel. And, to the source's credit, the huckleberry plant did survive in partial to full shade. But, upon further research, I have found out that they don't really thrive there, and in fact need full sun in order to do any berry production.
The two images above are (left) the little plant in its original pot that I bought back in February. And then (right) in its spot in my raised bed in June. 4 months later. And it had grown all of maybe half an inch in total. Which is what prompted me to do further reading.
Oh! I also found out huckleberries are related to blueberries, and they share a love of more acidic soil.
So now I have transplanted it into a bucket with soil that has been amended to be more acidic. And it's actually two buckets, with the bottom one acting as a reservoir, so I can control the moisture in the soil better.
I'm gonna keep it in the shade for the next couple of days to help with any transplant shock. And then this baby is going into full sun!
(I might also get a small container blueberry plant and do the same set up for it. I am always looking for more berries to add to the garden.)

Huckleberry Licorice, My Montana Vacation Addiction
Huckleberries are big in Montana. My cousin introduced this Wiley Wallaby huckleberry licorice to me while on vacation. My friends, it’s addictive. It’s hard to find here in Tennessee so it was mail ordered. It’s not cheap. This is definitely a splurge.

Vespid wasp enjoying a meal of ripe huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata)
white chocolate chip huckleberry cookies 🤍🫐
½c butter, softened (113g)
½c white sugar (100g)
~1c huckleberries (~160g)
1c all-purpose flour (120g)
½tsp baking powder
½tsp salt
100g white chocolate chips
cream together butter & sugar till light & fluffy
add in huckleberries & mix with a hand mixer on high until the berries are fully combined into the creamed butter-sugar mixture --- it will be a bit watery
sift in the flour, baking powder, & salt, & combine
once the drys are about half incorporated, add in the chocolate chips then finish mixing
cover & chill in the freezer at least 30min
preheat oven to 400F
grease a baking sheet & make heaping tablespoon sized balls of dough
baking 10-13min, rotating the pan halfway through
quick huckleberry jam 🫐🌿
pint huckleberries (375g)
¼c sugar (50g)
2tb lemon juice
add all ingredients to a pot on medium heat & mash the huckleberries while bringing the mixture to a boil
once boiling, lower the heat to low/medium-low & continue to cook on a simmer, stirring constantly
cook until the mixture starts to thicken, about 20min or so
remove from heat & let cool --- it will thicken more as it cools
jar & enjoy!
