I just saw on instagram some great uh... debate?

The main question was basically which one was better between the nine realms and the remake.

Most said live action.

One said something about "i loved it because it made me feel nostalgic, was like oh it's unnecessary but felt excited afterwards"

And the eternal "take notes Disney"

Tbh, i think that if it had been the other way around, we would see "take notes Dreamworks" but i digress. It's crazy how many times I have seen people say the reason they watched LA slop (not even HTTYD, but in the past years), was nostalgia.

Nostalgia brings money so easily.

The person was spitting harshly on Disney LAs but oh no, Httyd "had soul and emotion". Yeah, that's the bare minimum isn't it?

Still trying to find the "emotion" in the extract I painfully watched but seriously cannot find it. I just saw the music being completely incoherent with the scene (weither the music itself is bad or not is another matter I have next to no opinion on), and a flock of rushed images that made me think "they tried to cram the exact same images from the original but that's it"

Of course, I can't say more about the rest because I have still not watched it, but yeah, basically dude was like

Yeah, so you mean that because it's there, no matter if it's shit, why try to stop it? Let's support it instead because we can't do anything as a whole (which is true unfortunately), even though we hate it. But as long as you feel nostalgia and it has emotion, it's okay :)

Man we are not out of the situation when thinking like that, unfortunately, it's true.

Hey there! Need to give you a name anon

Here's the thing. Nine realms I never finished, I just watched YouTube reviews, so I have a general gist of it. Fundamentally I think it's worse for the same reason Hidden world is worse. The live action is just a bland soulless copy and you can pretty easily ignore it. But Nine realms and Hidden world are supposed to be canon. They're part of the story of the first two movies. Which, unless you choose to ignore them how I have, kinda sours the whole franchise

I don't think the live action is better, I think it's the lesser of two evils

Nostalgia isn't a bad thing, but it's bad when people let nostalgia blind them. When just seeing any version of your favorite characters on screen becomes the equivalent of jangling keys to a toddler.

And with remakes especially it just confuses me. "I watched it because of nostalgia" Alright, why not watch the ORIGINAL which is WIDELY AVAILABLE and is what you're ACTUALLY nostalgic for? I'm very nostalgic about a lot of things, httyd included. I remember the day I got handed my Kung fu panda disc, told "It's some movie about a panda, you'll probably like it" and put it in the DVD player and was changed as a person holy shit. But Kung fu panda 4 is utter and complete ass and I don't feel nostalgia watching it, I feel rage at them ruining something so special (and how they treated one of their directors/screenwriters, that woman could've saved the movie if they listened to her)

We come back to desperation and, honestly, stupidity and lack of an attention span with this. I have a friend who under no circumstances will agree to re-watch something. Because they've already seen it they don't wanna. Which is frankly toddler behavior (or the opposite since toddlers will watch the same movie 3 times in a row)

So I can see how those movies appeal to those kinda of people. I don't LIKE it but I understand, mechanically, how it works. It's still gross they're willing to throw away integrity for slop entertainment though

So. Here's the thing. It doesn't even have that. If it genuenly had soul, and emotion. Sure, fuckin sure. But it doesn't. *insert compilation of Astrid clips I posted a while ago* Everyone in this movie is either acting stupid and over the top in a bad way, or they're so stilted it's embarrassing to watch. (I'm not blaming the actors for this, they've done well in other movies, the ones I've seen, but here the direction and the script are so bad they can't do much)

"they tried to cram the exact same images from the original but that's it" Oh you mean how they just yoinked/traced/heavily referenced the storyboard of the original movie because they knew the cinematography was too good to replace? Yeah they did do that. And they did it badly. There's a post somewhere on here of someone comparing a shot from Forbidden friendship between the animated and live action. And the values, the composition, everything. Is SO BAD. The original perfectly understands values and placement and does everything so right. Meanwhile the live action just, copied the shot. With absolutely no understanding of WHY it worked and missed so many crucial details in its construction

Never having seen a single one of these in any way that supports disney is my little badge of honor. I'm never supporting that shit and sideeying anyone who does, for any reason. Do better.

Lilo and stitch (from what I've read, I'm white so I can't speak on it myself) is straight up racist. And says "yea go ahead and abandon the only family you have left because your education is movie important than a dumb little sister" yknow what. That could work. If it were ANYONE other than Nani and Lilo. They love each other, they piss each other off, that's just how siblings are, but the real(animated) ones, would never abandon each other or hurt each other on purpose. The live action fundamentally misses the point of both their characters

Well, alongside other issues, it's as bad as I expected.

We were especially driven up the wall by how emotionless the acting was. (An exception being Stoick's actor, he's like the only good actor there, at least he tried. The other actors, however..) They didn't even try, and it felt like watching a school play half the time.

And the characters (especially Astrid imo) were written as a bit more mean than the original in the beginning. Gobber even outright insults Fishlegs at one point.

Heck, even John Powell decided that since this movie lacked effort, he decided to treat the soundtrack song titles as such, which is kinda hilarious: "This is Real Berk" "Test driving Toothless" " and finally, The End Credits Suite" ect..

Okay so I found part of an interview I mentionned last time.

Apparently the issues were mostly because of her public image. I may have misunderstood it at the time I read it. So she has very mixed feelings about her experience

Anyway. I was talking to a family member about why I really do not want to watch the full movie. I explained the difference between animated and remake.

And showed them the difference between the two supports with hicctooth's first enconter in the woods.

I had just seen the way toothless screams at hiccup, and boy was it enough for me to telm there was absolutely nothing even remotely ... "scary" or serious imo.

But I tumbled on the more complete scene.

I lost 3 minutes of my life. My gods it was painful to watch. What the hell is wrong with the pacing, the music timing, and boy i genuinely felt almost zero emotion coming either from toothless or hiccup.

I knew this part was bad. But to this point?

Wow.

That was painful to watch.

There wss no tension, no danger. Nothing. I am in no way a movie specialist, but even to my noobie eyes, that felt wrong.

Ah I see. I can't know what she meant for sure but I think you're right, it was more how people irl perceived her. Because her character in the Pirates movies is honestly very tomboyish and challenging of the traditional roles of a woman in the time period, she spends most of the saga in men's clothes and ends it as a pirate king. At least that's how I saw it

Oh yeah the tone in the live action sucks beyond belief. It's all, fake is a word I'd use to describe it. Which is ironic considering this is the "realistic" one. Everyone is acting so stiff and weird and it could be because I'm so used to the animated performances, but in the LA they just don't feel right

I wouldn't call myself a specialist either but I've looked into and learned a lot about movies and shows and filmmaking in general. Especially on the animated side. I can't know what happened behind the scenes, but what I am seeing is the end result, and it's not up to par, at all
