The worst part wasnāt being benched. It wasnāt even being forbidden from strapping on skates. It wasnāt the surgery or the pain. It wasnāt the injury itself, though it was particularly rankling that it hadnāt been acquired on ice. Heād gone to spend Monday afternoon with the Pikes, both to catch up with Hayden after the bye week and to soothe his frayed nerves by spending some wholesome time with kids who adored him and didnāt give half a shit that he was an NHL star. When heād seen Ruby teetering on her training bike on their plowed street and had lunged to catch her, slipping and landing at a terrible angle on his left wrist, knowing immediately that that pain was not right, the worst part was this: he hadnāt even needed to make that grandiose abortive leap at all. Ruby had wobbled back the other way, righting herself, and pedalled on, happy as a clam.

noticed that whenever J.J. is the BFF, Shane is shushing him when he's not toggling between exasperatedly amused and snappish. there's always this tone of irritation, which reminds me of how fic writes interracial friendships, particularly where one of the friends, typically the non-MC, is black.
