day 8 of @hprecfest - rec a fic that was recced to you

Pissing for England, by @moonflower-rose - M, 2k, 2021

Summary: They're sharing a flat as part of an Auror training exercise, but if Ron can't learn to piss more quietly, they may not make it out alive.

Excerpt:

“You piss like a hippogriff mate, you know this. Hermione has definitely had this conversation with you before.”

“Yeah, but I thought that was just her being a girl, you know.” Ron chewed forcefully. “Because they sit down, innit, so it doesn’t make so much noise. Whereas I’m coming from-”

“A greater height,” Harry rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I know, mate. Malfoy was ready to commit murder this morning, though, and it was incredibly loud. He stormed into my room in his knickers to chew me out about it.”

Ron raised an eyebrow. “In his knickers, you say?”

Harry pursed his lips, and poured himself a refill of tea. “Mmmhmm.”

“You must’ve hated that,” Ron said mildly, and started buttering slices three and four. “Get a good look, did you?”

“Shut it,” Harry said, low, looking over at Malfoy’s closed door. “He was threatening violence, I’ll have you know.”

“Again,” Ron put far more jam on than was reasonable, and got a great deal more on the table. “You must have hated that.”

Thanks to my good pal @tackytigerfic this was the first Rosie fic I read, and I loved every single line of it. It's hilarious, with an excellent set-up and top quality banter, and poor long-suffering roommates Neville and Ron. (Also, Rosie is a truly lovely human being, and every one of her fics is solid gold, so if you enjoy this tiny morcel you're bound to love the rest!)

FINALLY THE DAY HAS ARRIVED

I have been SO EXCITED ever since I saw this prompt that I will finally be able to rec some of the best podfics out there <3

The podfics I have chosen to include are in one way or another special to me in a way only audio media can be. Like that song you have heard on your first date and it’s now your song. Well, by this pattern I have „my podfic” of first commute to new workplace, this one autumn sunny walk with my dog, finding an absolute joy in a new hobby and finally being able to clean the dishes AFTER the meal rather than before it xd

The war was over. Or at least that’s what the papers said. They’d been saying it, for months, as if people needed reminding. Maybe they did. *** In which Harry and Draco both run away from their pasts and conveniently choose to hide in the same tiny American town. It's super.

Day 15: A fic over 50k (for @hprecfest)

I read this fic in the space of two days and mostly while deep cleaning my kitchen, and let me tell you, it was the balm my soul needed to vanquish the stubborn greasy corners in the oven.

This is a timetravel fic that sends Harry and Draco into the future, where things aren't at all as either of them expected them to be. If it sounds like a complicated plot, it is -- but it doesn't feel like it, because Maester manages to juggle all the plot elements flawlessly, balancing both past and future versions of Harry and Draco, and introducing a lovely cast of other canon characters too: I particularly loved Minerva and Greg (but they're all great).

Most of all, however, Maester tells a story of learning not only how to love someone else but also how to fight for one's own right to a happy life. It's heartwrenching and beautiful and I kind of want to start reading it all over again now.

Gods, this fic. It's 65k of porn with plot and both the porn and the plot are to die for, in that the plot is the perfect setup for the porn, and the porn is some of the hottest I've read so far. The anticipation that builds up in the beginning had me panting and sweating. I loved every sex scene, but it's the sweet frustration of the first several chapters that I remember the most vividly. And then there's the bewildering assortment of sex spells with their lovely latin incantations, fitting seamlessly into the underlying world of magic. This is actually one of my favorite stories in terms of world-building too! A most delicious treat.

day fifteen: a fic over 50,000 words long

second life by nwhiker and cassandra7 sirius black/severus snape mature | 53.5k words

why i recommend it: 

because it's a masterpiece. even if you don't read this ship - even if you don't normally read either of these characters - it will floor you. 

its premise is that sirius survives the second war, and tentatively re-establishes contact with snape when they realise that they are the only people of their generation still alive. the relationship - both as friends and lovers - which blooms from there is an astonishingly beautiful meditation on the weight of grief, joy, chance, and atonement, and a magisterial portrayal of the fact that to be in love is a choice - not always easy - freely made each day.

outside of its romantic plot, it's also a wonderful look at one of my favourite fanfiction subjects - the fact that voldemort's death does nothing to change the fundamental corruption of the wizarding world. its musings on what justice actually means and forgiveness actually requires are gorgeous, and it takes a mature look at how harry's own complacency in these matters would nuance his relationship with sirius as he grows older.
