When you research HPMOR these days in "discourse circles" outside of Lesswrong+, what you find very frequently is people posing the question "why did anyone enjoy this? How did it get so popular?" And that can seem like a mystery - the story is very flawed after all! It is very much true that it has weird characterization, cringe jargon, and a first-draft plot structure.
But this honestly isn't very mysterious to me: the story is popular because it is fun. Most stories have flaws at least somewhat as big - a lot of fanfic in particular has loose plot structures and editing due to being serial fic. No one cares about the weaknesses when the strengths are good. When you read HPMOR - beyond the first few chapters, which do authentically suck - you pretty consistently get well-written "puzzles" in each chapter where there is some problem to solve or fight to be had, and that puzzle is treated with flash, high-sounding concepts, and good prose. Yudkowsky is very good at writing out flows of logic, and making them pop with metaphors, jokes, etc. He is an experienced and talented writer, publishing prose online for free and at a regular pace.
It isn't the best book ever or anything, but you already know the "Less Wrong connection" thing to get readers in the door. They stayed because staying was fun, and even though there is more to it than that, I don't think you need more than that to dissolve the idea of it being a mystery.
Maybe love is always a purifying force. Maybe love is always a corrupting force. Maybe the universe cares not for your logic. Maybe everything false and true at once huh? Huh? Thought about that! Bad is good and good is bad! Sacred is profane!
Fanwork Friday: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
This week’s Fanwork Friday is Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (also known as HPMOR), a well-known but controversial Harry Potter fanfiction written by Eliezer Yudkowsky which reimagines the plot of the first book through the lens of science and rationality. HPMOR was incredibly popular, with parts of the story translated into 15 languages, and even spawning its own recursive fanworks!
The fanfic also prompted a wide variety of fan responses: for example, it was was often referenced by those outside fannish spaces and praised as an example of the way fanfiction could build on the world of a canon. However, other fans looked much more critically at the story, considering it to be exploiting fandom to promote Yudkowsky’s “rationalist” philosophies and professional work.
