Sorting "The Wizard of Oz" Characters into Hogwarts Houses
MGM’s 1939 The Wizard of Oz movie is a cinematic staple with references and visuals still used today. Based on Frank L. Baum’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the film allows us all to relate to Dorothy’s journey of self-growth on the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City. Similar to Harry Potter, she was chosen to embark on a brave adventure with the help of loyal friends and a little bit of magic. While there have been many adaptations of the story – Return to Oz, Oz the Great and Powerful, Wicked, and more – the original movie is the foundation of the musical we know and love today. Read below to find out which Hogwarts Houses the characters from The Wizard of Oz would be sorted into!
Dorothy – Hufflepuff
The Wizard of Oz’s main character, Dorothy, is a Hufflepuff. She loves her dog (Toto), daydreams about what’s over the rainbow, and connects strongly with others. Her journey with newfound friends through the land of Oz shows that she is kind, accepting, and always willing to offer a helping hand. At the end of the movie, she learns that she had the power to send herself home all along just by clicking together her ruby slippers.
The Scarecrow – Ravenclaw
Rescued by Dorothy in a cornfield, the Scarecrow joins her journey down the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City. His greatest wish is for the Wizard to give him a brain. Made of stuffing and straw, he believes he has no intelligence. The Wizard tells him that real intelligence comes not from having a brain but from how one chooses to make decisions. The Scarecrow proves himself wise during the journey with quick thinking and wit – making him a perfect fit for Ravenclaw.
The Tin Man – Hufflepuff
The Tin Man is a Hufflepuff. Like Dorothy, he is curious and caring. He wishes to ask the Wizard to place a heart within his tin interior so that he can finally feel emotions. The Wizard tells the Tin Man that a heart is not measured by how much it can love, but by how much others love you. The Tin Man’s sensitivity and kindness – and the love from his companions – prove he already has the biggest heart of them all.
The Cowardly Lion – Gryffindor
Afraid of his own shadow, the Cowardly Lion joins Dorothy’s quest after attempting to scare her and her companions in the forest. He hopes the Wizard will give him courage. Though he doubts his bravery, he protects his friends during their journey. In the end, he learns from the Wizard that bravery is not the absence of fear and that true courage is facing danger when you are afraid. The Cowardly Lion is indeed the king of the forest and a Gryffindor.
The Wicked Witch of the West – Slytherin
The villain of The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the East, is a Slytherin. Ever since Dorothy’s house crashed in Munchkinland, she made it her mission to capture her and take back her sister’s ruby slippers. The witch’s cruel tactics included a winged monkey attack, setting the Scarecrow on fire, locking Dorothy in a room, and threatening to drown Toto if she didn’t hand over the slippers. In the end, good prevails over evil, and the Wicked Witch of the West is no more.
Glinda – Hufflepuff
To the people of Oz, Glinda is known as Glinda the Good Witch of the South. Traveling by bubble and holding a magic star wand, the sorceress welcomes Dorothy and gracefully gives her guidance on how to get back home to Kansas. She serves as a protector and ruler of Quadling Country, equipped with many magical powers. She wants what’s best for the Ozians and is willing to help them in any way she can. Glinda is a Hufflepuff.
The Wizard of Oz – Slytherin
The Wizard of Oz is a Slytherin. He is an opportunist who lets the citizens of Oz believe he has magical powers when, in fact, he does not. When Dorothy and her companions come to ask for his help, he manipulates them into killing the Wicked Witch of the West for his gain. At the end of The Wizard of Oz, he flees once again in his hot air balloon and leaves Dorothy and the Ozians behind.

Which Hogwarts House would you Sort the main characters of Descendants 1, 2, and 3 into? We have some ideas.
Mal – Slytherin
Mal, the daughter of Maleficent, is a leader unafraid to fight for justice. She is fiercely loyal to a small group of people and will defend them at any time. Evie – Ravenclaw
Evie is a Ravenclaw. Daughter of the Evil Queen, Evie grew up hiding her wisdom and knowledge to follow in her mother’s beauty-vain footsteps. However, once she excitedly arrives at Auradon Prep, she is accepted as her true inquisitive self and becomes the most sought-after fashion designer in Auradon.
Jay – Gryffindor
On the Isle of the Lost, Jay spent his time stealing items for his father, Jafar, and causing trouble with his best friends. In Auradon, that same restless energy is used running on the Tourney Field. He is brave and not afraid to put himself out there to make friends. Jay is a Gryffindor.
Carlos – Hufflepuff
Son of Cruella de Vil, Carlos shyly arrives in Auradon with a longtime fear of dogs. Slowly and surely – and after forming a friendship with a dog named Duke – he begins to like his new surroundings and creates lasting relationships. Kind and thoughtful, Carlos is a Hufflepuff.

Ben – Gryffindor
Ben, son of Belle and the King Beast, did the bravest thing Auradon has seen in a long time by inviting four villain kids – Mal, Jay, Evie, and Carlos – to leave the Isle of the Lost and attend Auradon Prep. The unorthodox decision was a leap of faith, showing that he puts his kingdom and its people first. He is an understanding person who accepts everyone. Ben is a Gryffindor.
Jane – Hufflepuff
Jane is a Hufflepuff. The daughter of Fairy Godmother, Jane begins her time at Auradon Prep timidly and softly. However, once the villain kids arrive, she finds a spark in herself to be bold and assertive. She speaks her mind, creates strong friendships, and even finds love with Carlos!
Audrey – Slytherin
Audrey, Sleeping Beauty’s daughter, has one goal: marry Ben and become Queen of Auradon. This plan was disrupted when Mal arrived from the Isle of the Lost and was proposed to by Ben. Audrey took on a darker side, terrorizing Auradon and its students, until she finally turned back to her old self with remorse. Audrey is a Slytherin.
Lonnie – Gryffindor
Lonnie is a true Gryffindor. Her mother, Mulan, taught her to be fearless and challenge the status quo. When she overhears Jay and Carlos plotting to rescue Ben on the Isle of the Lost in Descendants 2, she demands to go along and help them save the day. She is a protector, Auradon Prep’s fencing captain, and a great friend.

Sorting Pokemon Characters with the SSS
Here's all my current typings for Pokemon using my SSS system. Some characters like Max and May, etc are missing, since I don't remember/haven't seen the season yet, they'll be added when said seasons filter in to Pokemon TV.
----------------------------------
Ash - Gryffindor
Ash is pretty stereotypical Gryffindor. Bold and reckless and not afraid to charge into a situation, which has gotten him out of trouble as much as it's gotten him into it.
----------------------------------
Brock - Hufflepuff
Just as Ash is a stereotypical Gryffindor, Brock is just as much the stereotypical Hufflepuff. Loyal to his friends and Pokemon, caring about seeing people and Pokemon's needs met, tending to everyone and everything, even once having to be forced to lay down when sick by his Pokemon.
----------------------------------
Misty - Ravenclaw
Misty is quite a bit of a hatstall, having actually a fairly even mix of traits of all the houses, Ravenclaw and Slytherin ended up just barely edging out on top, Misty's personally doesn't really seem to lend it's self well to Slytherin, so I've put her in Ravenclaw, but trait wise, she might actually fit any of these houses.
----------------------------------
Jessie - Gryffindor
Jessie is a clear Gryffindor, despite being easily the harshest member of Team Rocket, she has a lot of Gryffindor traits, being quite bold, rash, ect.
----------------------------------
James - Slytherin
Again, a bit of a hatstall, this time between Hufflepuff and Slytherin, it honestly depends which version of James your getting to see in the moment, as a part of Team Rocket (especially when around Jessie and Meowth), he is way more Slytherin, being very goal focused and ambitious to catching Pikachu and farthing Team Rocket's goals (the later especially in 5th gen season of the anime). But, has also shown a huge amount of care and concern to his Pokemon , Jessie, Meowth, even others outside of Team Rocket, especially when left to his own devices away from Team Rocket. I put him in Slytherin though, because despite the caring and loyalty in his personality, he's still quite ambitious and determined, in a way the makes me think he's a better fit for Slytherin, as he repeatedly always comes back the Team Rocket ish goals, and determination to catch Pikachu, even with many opportunities to leave.
----------------------------------
Meowth - Slytherin
Meowth very much has the cleverness, determination, pride and ambition of a Slytherin, easily being the most cunning and even determined of Team Rocket, considering he taught himself to speak in human language, despite the difficultly.
----------------------------------
Dawn - Slytherin
Dawn is so focused on her goals for being a coordinator, and her ambition to be like her mother, has loyalty to her friends and Pokemon, and is great at coming up with moves for her contests.
----------------------------------
Cilan - Ravenclaw
Cilan is a hatstall between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, however given Cilan's inclination to learn about everything of interest to him (people, Pokemon, trains, detective work, etc), and a clear curiosity of many things, I think he better fits Ravenclaw, but he does have many of the Hufflepuff qualities as well, much in the manor of Brock.
----------------------------------
Bianca - Gryffindor
She is such a Gryffindor, being rash, quick to jump at things (with little regard to anything else), and adventurous that she stood out as a clear Gryffindor, even though her Hufflepuff traits were almost as high.
Based on my own personal repetitive habits, I have decided I must be rid of the small table I use as a nightstand. Replace it with a wall shelf. Use the ground space for 2 things:
Clothes hamper.
Trash can.
A stand up linen closet for the corner would be nice, too. For all the extra blankets and sheets to actually have a HOME.
Wait...
I think one of our dressers has an empty drawer or two.. hmmm...
