Driftmark's library was rather warm,contrasting nicely with the rather cold halls, the fire had been burning for hours now, and each time you thought it would surely be embers with how long it had been alight, you would check to see, that alas, it was not ash and embers.

Your betrothed had joined you today, although he is not an avid reader like you, he still likes to avoid his lessons to be with you.

"Are you enjoying the book so far, my lady?" Lucerys asks, sitting next to you. He had been reading over your shoulder but had stopped a while ago, growing bored.

"Perfectly, Luce. And please, do not refer to me as 'my lady' it makes me feel old." You hum, smiling softly, "Besides, we are to be married in a month."

Lucerys' cheeks grow red from embarrassment as he started to apologise perfusly - to which you tell him it's okay.

“you’re holding it wrong,” he teased, stepping closer, his hand brushing yours as he adjusted your grip on the wooden practice sword. his touch lingered a heartbeat too long before he pulled away with a boyish grin.

“funny,” you shot back, raising an eyebrow, “because i seem to remember landing more hits on you last time.”

he gasped dramatically, pressing a hand to his chest. “that was an accident. i was distracted.”

“distracted?” you echoed, circling him with a playful smirk. “by what?”

lucerys hesitated just long enough for your smile to widen. his cheeks flushed pink, but his eyes never left yours. “by… certain company,” he admitted softly, twirling his sword to disguise the sudden nerves.

your laughter carried on the sea breeze, light and teasing. “you’re terrible at hiding things, my prince.”

“and you’re terrible at following instructions,” he retorted, stepping close enough that the tips of your shoes brushed. his grin softened into something more genuine, his voice lowering. “but gods, do i enjoy teaching you.”

the air between you tightened, his playful energy shifting into something tender. then, with a mischievous gleam, he tapped your shoulder lightly with the blunt edge of his practice sword. “point for me.”

you let out an incredulous laugh, shoving him lightly. “that doesn’t count!”

“oh, it absolutely counts,” he insisted, laughing as you gave chase, both of you darting across the courtyard like children again, the sound of your laughter mingling with the crash of the waves below.

eventually, you collapsed beside him on the steps, breathless and smiling. he glanced at you, still grinning, but with a softer warmth in his eyes now. “one day,” he murmured, “i’ll win properly. and not just with a sword.”
