i LOVE this question!! so much!! i literally spent last night and this morning gushing to family fc about how excited i am to answer it!!

i love love love buffy's ability to set a scene. her use of language is so beautiful and yet it feels so effortless. it's what hooked me immediately when i started reading cyfabh, and it's what i think is really strong about the beginning of iwgtbw. even though you don't know anything about the characters and have little reason to care about them yet, her hooks/settings are so beautiful and intricate you feel like you've stepped into a whole other world, and it's quite nice, so why don't you stay a while?

here are some excerpts of hers that i think illustrate what i'm talking about:

"Seattle in the spring was not for the faint of heart. The sun had packed its bags months ago, leaving a gray heaviness settled over the city."

"Paige decides, somewhere between Azzi stealing the last bite of her pastry and the sound of rain starting to tap softly against the cafe windows, that she could do this forever. "

"The Dallas heat is stifling as Paige crosses the parking lot, phone to her ear, the sun bright enough to make her squint because she’s pretty sure she left her sunglasses at the training facility. Again."

my favorite thing about drip's writing is her mastery over tension. each chapter of hot lap is packed with it, and interlagos 2 is the perfect example. tension between her characters, yes, but tension between the reader and the story as well. tension between what we know and what we don't know. tension between what we want to happen and what has to happen. she builds it so naturally, and it's addicting.
