Been working on the horse barn for 3 hours and you can hardly tell I've done anything. I must take a break to get water, then do a bit of beekeeping. I can't let another day pass by without checking on the hives. #daddykirbs #growreallife #horsebarn #pole #barn #beekeeping

Putting some of the last screws in the top boards of the horse barn. 12 ft up in the air gave a nice view of tge beautiful setting sun. I was hoping to get the rafters on today, but no. #daddykirbs #horse #growreallife #horsebarn #pole #barn #sunset

(Todays cover pic: the cloud cover and fog were freaking beautiful today)
So Berit (a beautiful Norwegian Fjord horse) is probably the most diva you can get from a horse. Picture the self absorbed popular attractive girl from high school, and that’s Berit.
Now Berit is very opinionated and even more than that: impatient.
She, along with a few others, has dietary restrictions, mainly, she over grazes if left out the full turn out time. (Dawn to dusk during cooler months and overnight during summer) instead, she spends the time that everyone else spends grazing, stuck in a sandlot. She has hay and water of course, but no grass.
So in the morning, one of the first things my boss or I do is to turn her and Bria (her sandlot buddy) out for 3ish hours to graze before bringing them in with the rest.
I tell you what, out of every single horse I’ve worked with over the years, she is the most impatient of all of them. She’ll half drag you to her field if you’re not careful and oh the cruel person you must be if you turn Bria out before her. She’ll huff and puff and throw a hissy fit until you attend to her.
She’s got quite the collection of interesting incidents, but I’ll save those for another time. For now, here’s a picture of the diva herself:
Until next time, remember; the only thing worse than Winter stalls are Winter stalls in summer.

Diaries of a Stablehand #1
Hiya, so I work as a part time stablehand at a local horse barn, and thought it might be interesting (if only for my own amusement) to occasionally post things about life on the farm.
Let’s start with the background shall we?
I’ve known the family who runs the barn for ages, and worked for them off and on over the years, usually on weekends or over their family vacation, but early this year they needed “full time” help (aka, someone to help with the time sensitive tasks like feeding, turning out, cleaning, water etc. not things like maintenance- altho I do that too sometimes).
So since February I’ve been working every morning, 5-6 days a week at the barn. And I’m realizing, it’s a very distinct work experience. I get to work with horses, meet boarders, learn about the horses routines, learn about their personalities and form relationships with each one and yes, a huge part of my job is cleaning horse crap.
I’ll probably just post whatever sort of interesting thing happens, or recount past experiences, just because I’ve found people enjoy hearing about it. And hey; if nothing else, it’ll give Berit the “pick me” mare the Internet presence she’s wanted for so long.
That’s all for now, hope your day is free of horse crap,
Nate

Half way between dreading work tomorrow and thinking it's gonna be totally okay. Like, I have the mental energy set aside, I have a game plan, I have my schedule, so it should all be okay right....?
Right....?
Either that or I'll hit about 1pm and cry in the bathroom like I did last week XD Stay tuned to find out!
