Hello, here's my cover for the newest folk horror series from @ray_fawkes, BLUE PALO VERDE published by Mad Cave Studios! A: @rimanti_n C: @rifandraw L: @gofrankgo
Hiii!!! I would like feedback on this short horror story I wrote.
Story One - The open door
âI'm being chased! Help me! Please!â
A girlâs voice echoed through the darkness, filled with a fear I could feel in my bones. I tried to run toward her, but my feet wouldnât move. The hallway stretched endlessly in front of me, the walls shifting and breathing like they were alive.
âWait!â I screamed.
The girl turned around.
I could never see her face.
Only her blood-covered clothes.
Only her terrified eyes.
Only the way she reached toward me like she knew I was the only person who could save her.
Then came the sound.
A door creaking open.
Slowly.
Painfully slowly.
Behind her.
Something was coming.
âDonât let it find me!â
I reached out.
But she disappeared.
**BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.**
I shot awake.
My room was dark except for the pale light coming through my curtains. My heart slammed against my chest as I stared at my bedroom door.
It was open.
I froze.
It was always open after those dreams.
I knew I closed it every night.
I always did.
For a few seconds, I just stared at the empty doorway, waiting for something to appear.
Nothing did.
I forced myself to look away.
âIt was just a dream,â I whispered.
But I didn't believe myself.
---
My name is Mavis Hawk, and everyone thinks Iâm crazy.
I guess I understand why.
Itâs hard to believe someone when they say they hear voices no one else can hear. Itâs even harder when they insist they had a sister that nobody remembers.
But I know I had one.
I know I did.
The problem isâŚ
I canât remember her.
Not completely.
Just pieces.
A laugh.
A hand holding mine.
A voice telling me everything would be okay.
And a door.
Always a door.
---
The city I lived in was the kind of place where people learned not to look too closely at their surroundings. Crime was normal. Sirens were background noise. Everyone had their own problems, and nobody wanted to get involved with someone elseâs.
Maybe that was why nobody noticed when I started changing.
After the incident, I stopped talking.
Stopped making friends.
I stopped leaving my house unless I had to.
The only people who stayed were Dorian and Lilith.
The twins had lived next door my entire life. They were the only people who never looked at me like I was broken.
They knew about the voices.
They knew about the dreams.
They never told me I was imagining things.
At lunch, I sat across from them, trying to pretend I wasnât exhausted.
Dorian studied me carefully.
âYou didnât sleep again, did you?â
I looked down at my food.
âI had the dream.â
The twins exchanged a glance.
They didnât need to ask which one.
Lilith lowered her voice.
âThe girl again?â
I nodded.
The girl.
The one who was always running.
The one who was always afraid.
The one who always disappeared before I could see her face.
Then I heard it.
A whisper.
Soft.
Almost impossible to hear.
âMavisâŚâ
My entire body went still.
The cafeteria noise faded away.
âMavisâŚâ
My hands tightened around the table.
That voice.
I knew it.
I had always known it.
âAre you okay?â Dorian asked.
I looked at him, barely able to breathe.
âI heard her.â
Lilithâs expression changed.
âWhat did she say?â
I swallowed.
âShe said my name.â
---
I left the cafeteria before anyone could stop me.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
I walked toward my locker, trying to convince myself I was overreacting.
Then I saw it.
A small object sitting inside.
My bedroom key.
My stomach dropped.
I never brought my bedroom key anywhere.
Slowly, I picked it up.
There was a piece of paper attached.
Three words.
**Remember me, Mavis.**
My fingers went cold.
The handwriting was familiar.
Not because I saw it recently.
Because I had spent years trying to forget it.
---
When I got home, the house felt different.
It always had.
People thought I hated my house because it was old. Because the floors creaked. Because the lights flickered.
But that wasnât why.
I hated it because the house remembered things I couldnât.
Every night, my bedroom door opened by itself.
Every night, I heard footsteps outside my room.
Every night, I heard someone whispering my name.
Everyone said it was my imagination.
Everyone said I was creating memories that never happened.
But they were wrong.
The house was trying to tell me something.
I climbed the stairs slowly.
My bedroom door was open.
Again.
My heart started racing.
I stepped inside.
Something was different.
On my desk was a photograph.
I picked it up.
Two girls stood together in the picture.
One was me.
The other had the same dark curls, the same green eyes, and a smile that felt strangely familiar.
On the back, written in faded ink, were four words.
**Mavis and Evelyn.**
My breath caught.
Evelyn.
The name felt like a memory trapped behind a locked door.
I touched the picture.
And suddenly, I remembered something.
Not everything.
Just a piece.
A girl sitting beside me on the stairs.
A girl telling me not to be scared.
A girl who promised she would come back.
Then the whisper came again.
âHelp meâŚâ
This time, I didnât run.
For years, I had ignored the voices.
For years, I had convinced myself they werenât real.
But what if they werenât trying to scare me?
What if they were trying to lead me somewhere?
I followed the voice.
---
The hallway became darker with every step.
I passed my parentsâ room.
I stopped.
The voice came from inside.
âHelp meâŚâ
My hand reached for the door.
It opened easily.
Too easily.
Inside, everything looked untouched.
Like time had stopped.
Then I noticed something strange.
The floor.
One of the boards looked different.
Older.
Damaged.
Like someone had tried to hide something underneath.
My hands shook as I pulled it open.
And that was when everything came back.
Not all at once.
Piece by piece.
A memory.
A scream.
My sisterâs voice.
My fatherâs anger.
The sound of something falling.
Me hiding on the stairs.
Me waiting for Evelyn to come back.
And her never coming.
---
December 24, 2015.
The night everyone told me I was wrong.
The night everyone told me I never had a sister.
My parents were fighting downstairs.
I was too young to understand what they were saying, but I knew something was wrong.
Evelyn found me crying on the stairs.
She sat beside me.
âItâs going to be okay, Mavis.â
I believed her.
I always believed her.
Then she went downstairs.
She told me she would be right back.
But she wasnât.
I heard shouting.
I heard her scream.
And thenâŚ
Silence.
The next morning, everyone acted like nothing happened.
Like Evelyn never existed.
Like my memories were lies.
But they werenât.
They were just buried.
---
I looked down at the hidden space beneath the floor.
The truth had been hidden for ten years.
Not because it wasnât there.
Because someone wanted it to stay forgotten.
My sister wasnât a ghost haunting my house.
She was the reason the house kept opening its doors.
She was the reason I kept hearing whispers.
She wasnât trying to scare me.
She was trying to be found.
The door had never opened because something was coming in.
It opened because something had been trapped inside.
And after ten yearsâŚ
Evelyn had finally found a way out.

APPALACHIAN VAMPIRE HORROR: 'The Horror Undying' by Manly Wade Wellman F...
My Wife Keeps Coming Home at 3:17 AM â But She Died Two Years Ago
Every night, at exactly 3:17 AM, I hear the front door unlock.
Itâs always the same sequence: a soft click, a hesitant creak, and the faint sound of heels on hardwood. Then the smellâfaint lavender and cigarette smoke, her scent. My wifeâs scent.
The problem is, my wife, Eliza, died two years ago in a car crash. Closed casket. I never saw her body.
It started a month ago. I thought I was dreaming the first time I heard it. I sat up in bed, heart pounding, listening to footsteps making their way down the hallway. Then silence. Nothing in the morning. Just a locked door and an empty house.
But the next night, and the next, it kept happening.
So I did what any grieving, half-insane man would doâI started waiting.
At 3:10 AM, Iâd sit on the couch, lights off, phone recording, watching the door. On the sixth night, the lock clicked. I froze. The door opened a crack, just a sliver. Then closed again. No one entered.
When I checked the recording, the time jumped. One frame showed the clock at 3:16:58. The nextâ3:18:01. A full minute gone. Glitched out. Nothing in between. Just static.
I called the cops. They found no signs of forced entry, no prints but mine. They suggested I might be sleepwalking orâworseâimagining it all. I didnât tell them about the missing time. Or the lavender. Or that I started waking up with bruises shaped like fingertips on my arms.
I finally told my friend Mason. He brought over a thermal camera. We stayed up together. Nothing happened. 3:17 came and went. No sounds. No door. Just silence.
He left around 4, apologizing, saying I needed rest.
That morning, there were wet footprints on the kitchen tile. Bare feet. Size 6. Eliza's size.
I stopped inviting people over after that.
The bruises worsened. Iâd wake up gasping, fingernail scratches across my chest. I tried leaving the house at night, staying at hotels. Still, 3:17 AMâdoor creak, footsteps, the scent. Even miles away. She followed.
I finally broke down and visited her grave last week. I found her headstone knocked over, deep scratches gouged into the marble. Not like vandalism. More like⌠claw marks. I paid a groundskeeper to help me lift the stone, and as we did, something weird happenedâmy phone buzzed with a text.
From Eliza.
It just said: âWhy did you leave the door open?â
I threw up. Right there in the cemetery.
I went home and bolted every door and window. I even slept in the basement, no windows, no exterior doors. I thought I was safe.
That night, I woke up at 3:17 AM.
She was standing at the foot of the bed. Not a ghost, not translucent or floating. She looked exactly like she used toâexcept her skin was gray. Damp. Her eyes sunken. Mouth twitching like she was trying to smile but forgot how.
I couldnât move. Sleep paralysis. She leaned down, close to my face, and whispered:
âI hate that you cremated me.â
The basement door upstairs slammed.
She was gone.
Since then, things have escalated.
Photos of us are shredded in the morning. Her wedding dress, which I boxed up in the attic, appeared folded neatly on my bedâdamp and reeking of earth.
Sheâs not haunting the house. Sheâs haunting me.
Last night, I asked herâout loudâwhat she wanted.
At 3:17 AM, she answered:
âFinish what you started.â
I don't know what she means.
But I keep remembering something from her autopsy report. I asked the coroner, drunkenly, months after her death, whether she suffered. He paused, then said:
âWell⌠she had scratch marks on the inside of the coffin lid. Deep ones. We think she wasnât dead when they buried her.â
I never told anyone that. Not even Mason.
Tonight, Iâm digging up her grave.
Because I need to know one thing:
Is my wife still in there?
If she isâIâll finally let her rest.
If she isnâtâŚ
Then who keeps coming home at 3:17?
