Car Seats Create a Frame-within-a Frame Thanks to filmmaker Rob Savage (@dirrobsavage) we can add car seats to our expanding list of things used as onscreen frames. The example is from Savageās āDashcam,ā a contemporary horror picture that simulates live streaming. You can see the āDashcamā trailer plus find links to where the movie is streaming at MobileMovieMaking. #shotoniPhone #horrorflick #frame-within-a-frame https://www.instagram.com/p/CfJ5_b0Jb8w/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Scary Trees These days nature is widely viewed as a benign force. There are books such asāāNature As Teacher and Healer;ā articlesāāThe Healing Power of Natureā (Time magazine); and nonprofitsāNature Heals. But a clever filmmaker can turn a positive into a frightening negative as we see in this image from āDashcam,ā a horror feature directed by Rob Savage (@dirrobsavage). Savage's previous movie āHostā was one of the biggest indie hits of 2020. You can see the trailer for āDashcamā at MobileMovieMaking. The film itself is streaming online. #shotoniPhone #horrorflick #nature https://www.instagram.com/p/CfHmcZsPX5K/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Low-budget Monster The key character in many horror films is the monster. The classic method to create one relies on makeup and/or costumes (think Frankenstein). But that approach can be expensive and time-consuming. Luckily, if youāre working on a low- or no-budget fright film, there are alternatives. In his short horror pic āWelcome to the Club,ā UK filmmaker Elliott Maguire (@elliottmaguire2) relied on two $0.00 post-production techniques. For the glowing eyes, he used a lens flare effect in an app called VideoLeap (@videoleap_by_lightricks). Then to make it seem as if the monster were moving unnaturallyā at hyperspeedāhe sped up the frames. How did this work out? See for yourself by visiting MobileMovieMaking (link in profile) where āWelcome to the Clubā is showcased as the Mobile Movie of the Week. #mobilemovieoftheweek #horrorflick #Clubhosue #specialeffects #lowbudgetVFX #cinematography #horror #lensflare https://www.instagram.com/p/CMyDgAchuFz/?igshid=dr8t7ye97h16
Low-angle Shot in a Solo Production The pandemic has encouraged the art of the solo movieāwith a single filmmaker coming up with an idea, handling the camerawork and other crew jobs, and being the star. Maybe someday thereāll be an Oscar for the best film in this genre. But at the moment, we can learn an important solo-moviemaking lesson from āWelcome to the Club.ā This three-minute horror pic includes a low-angle shot of the filmmaker Elliott Maguire (@elliottmaguire2). The takeaway is that even if youāre working alone, you donāt need to sacrifice the power of shot variety. āWelcome to the Clubā is the current Mobile Movie of the Week. Just watched this and it was SOOooo cheesey but I loved it! It was intentionally bad hahaha, and that made it so good, and very laughable. I'm gonna buy this one for the collection. A comedy horror for sure. 𤣠* #horrorflick #horrorcomedy #horrormovie #willyswonderland #horrorfan https://www.instagram.com/p/CLdiHZDDFjE/?igshid=nl0ypf9lyzyr
