Low-budget Monster The key character in many horror films is the monster. The classic method to create one relies on makeup and/or costumes (think Frankenstein). But that approach can be expensive and time-consuming. Luckily, if you’re working on a low- or no-budget fright film, there are alternatives. In his short horror pic “Welcome to the Club,” UK filmmaker Elliott Maguire (@elliottmaguire2) relied on two $0.00 post-production techniques. For the glowing eyes, he used a lens flare effect in an app called VideoLeap (@videoleap_by_lightricks). Then to make it seem as if the monster were moving unnaturally— at hyperspeed—he sped up the frames. How did this work out? Low-angle Shot in a Solo Production The pandemic has encouraged the art of the solo movie—with a single filmmaker coming up with an idea, handling the camerawork and other crew jobs, and being the star. Maybe someday there’ll be an Oscar for the best film in this genre.
