Hozuki-sama frowned down at the twins, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
The girls had that face, scrunched brows and pouting lips with eyes thinned into pure dissatisfaction and guilt.
They wore the clothes that Hozuki bought the other day when they begged for him to get it for them from the world of the living. The matching clothes, although cute from the outside, was definitely something that can be described as… tacky.
Even after everything, they still wore it. Too guilty to let it go to waste after Hozuki’s arduous time in the clothes shop as an adult man stepping into the kids section for girl’s clothing—narrowly dodging the accusations of having that kind of hobby. To give the twins some credit, Hozuki’s chest slightly warmed that they cared about him enough to continue to wear the purchase, but it wasn’t enough to soften the blow of the dissatisfied expression they adored on their faces.
“Hozuki-sama, don’t look so angry at them…” you said, voice gentle and sweet as ever, as you gave him a faint pout.
He glanced at you, momentarily shoulders loosening at the doe gaze of your eyes, but quickly looked away. “I need to teach them a lesson.”
“It’s almost been a month, Hozuki-sama…”
You watched the twins play with their toys on the floor, heart melting, before you offered gently, “How about I go buy for them?”
Hozuki looked back at you, eyes widening faintly and brows raised slightly in surprise. But even quicker than that, the twins perked up at your words and immediately ran towards you, both of them grabbing onto the fabric of your kimono by the legs to tug at it eagerly.
“Can you?” Ichiko said.
“Please?” Niko replied next.
Both of their eyes sparkled with hope,
You smiled at them widely, about to reply when you were abruptly cut off.
“No.”
The three of you looked up at the small scowl on Hozuki’s face. The twins froze slightly at the sight and swiftly let go of your kimono, while you gave him a deeper pout.
“Why not?”
Hozuki said your name with a sigh. “Because you don’t have to answer their ridiculous requests.”
“But I want to,” you said, so softly and so sweetly, that his ears rushed with heat. They instantly turned a darker shade of pink when you placed your hands on his biceps, looking up at him with a pretty, coy downturn tilt of your chin. “Please?”
Who could say no to that?
Hozuki thought to himself as he recalled what just happened an hour ago.
Unlike the harsh white lights of the cheaper clothes shop he went to last time, you have chosen a trendier place with a warmer illuminant, clothes displayed in a more intentional manner than the stacks of rows he had to go through in his past visit.
He watched you fawn over the kids' clothes, squealing as you imagined the twins wearing them. He felt a tug in his chest as you scrambled across the shop, looking behind your shoulder to grin at him, asking him with a giggle which one he personally thought would suit the twins, completely forgetting the outcome from last time.
“Come to think of it,” he murmured, tilting his head, “your fashion from the world of the living is quite nice.”
You widened your eyes at the sudden compliment and you smiled bashfully. “Oh, thank you.”
He tenderly fiddled with the hem of your clothes, staring into your eyes with his ever-imposing yet comforting gaze. “Thank you for doing this for the twins,”
Your smile widened at that, eyes crinkling warmly. “No need to thank me. Besides, I’m really happy you came along to shop together.”
His heart skipped a beat, and gingerly, he ran his hand across the side of your waist to rest on your hip. “It’s my fault that you’re in this situation.”
Chuckling, you teased playfully, “Because of your horrible fashion taste?”
“Yes,” he replied without any hesitation, face impassive as always.
He was so sincere that you couldn’t help but roll your eyes, giggling. “You’re too polite, Hozuki-sama. We’ve been working together for centuries. You don’t need to care about being so courteous.”
He furrowed his brows for a brief moment, but they easily softened at your breathy laughter, bubbly and melodious.
“Are you and your husband searching for children’s clothes?” From beside you, a middle-aged clerk lady suddenly appeared and asked with a glimmer in her eyes, glancing between you two.
You froze at that, jolting to stand more upright and taking a step back away from him. You couldn’t help blinking in surprise at the lady, her words sinking in a scramble as your cheeks warmed up. Bashfully, you gave the lady a small smile. “Well, we’re not—”
“Do you have a recommendation for coordinating a twin outfit?” Hozuki said, stepping towards you to stand closer beside your frame.
The lady looked excited at the mention of twins, clapping her hands softly. “Oh my, a twin? Of course! Follow me!”
For a moment, you helplessly watched the lady’s back walk towards a specific section in the children's aisle. Peeking up at Hozuki from the corner of your eyes, you saw him coolly stare ahead, avoiding your eyes—yet he wordlessly took your hand delicately and led you towards where the clerk was heading.
From there, you stuttered your way through the process of choosing the twins' clothes.
A cute pair of t-shirts, pants, skirts, socks, shoes and dresses.
Everything was chosen so fast, felt so fast because of your mind being preoccupied with thoughts of him not denying that the two of you were married and had kids.
You were glancing at him nonstop, but you didn’t have the courage nor the calmness to say anything. So you let him lead you again—to the different sections, to the cashier, and to the exit.
As you took the paper bag and held it in one hand, Hozuki slowly lowered his own hand to hold onto the same handle, pinkies brushing against each other with every step taken.
Biting your lower lip, you tried desperately to stop the smile creeping up your face, but found yourself failing.
Hozuki's heart fluttered when he noticed the twitching of your lips and the shy pink colour on your cheeks. Carefully, he placed his pinky on top of yours, feeling your surprised jolt underneath his skin, and headed back to hell together.
