a little update on indiana's social media age verification lawβ it's not looking good but nothing i didn't expect.
january / february of this year, an age verification bill was introduced in this state; however, they keep changing the bills name. first, it was sb 199, then sb 1408, now hb 1408. it's also called the hailey's law bill.
this law has now been signed into law, and will ban social media for users under 16. it will go into effect july 1st of this year. it will require people to fork over sensitive information (facial scans and IDs) just for hoosier residents to use social media. while the bill isn't as bad as some laws i've seen popping up in other states, it's still BAD and the entire legislation is in support of this. not only that, but they briefly mentioned passing more, stricter bills in the state under the same pretense. this is scary.
sb 1408 (now labeled as hb 1408, for whatever reason) was signed by the governor into law a couple of weeks ago. i haven't kept a close eye on it since then but it doesn't seem like anything has changed in that field, sorry :(
i urge people to spread the word on this! if you live in indiana β protest! nobody is talking about this and it's making me sick; because other states that are passing these laws have great opposition or are getting coverage!! please call and bug the hell out of indianas legislators, reps, and governors so this bill doesn't pass. also, call your reps about kosa, the kids act, and appstore accountability act. tell them how harmful hb 1408 is, and even if you don't live in the state PLEASE, get the word out.
this bill is already law β but please protest anyway, it's needed more than ever!
