Challenge the Food Police
There's a tiny voice in my head that says "you shouldn't have pie for lunch" and then I remind myself, I can eat whatever I want. Those tiny voices (or sometimes large voices!) in our head are what's referred to as the food police. The food police reinforce those rules that years of dieting have ingrained in our minds. It's important to challenge these thoughts with a firm NO! When I sat down to eat, I noticed that what I really wanted was a slice of natural berry pie. I enjoyed each bite, and was satisfied with that selection without feeling guilty. Afterward, I noticed that hunger was still present so I had some carrots and hummus to have some balance and felt satisfied.
Instead of eating what a diet would deem as a "healthy" lunch, and then eating pie and likely eating more than a slice, I listened to my body upfront and didn't restrict or prevent myself from eating what I wanted. I knew that I would feel better physically if I had a range of foods, so I added a protein and vegetable. It's important to note that this was because I wanted to, not because I felt like I had to "make up" for the pie. Had the food police told me I HAD to now only eat vegetables, I likely would have said "screw you" and continued eating more pie. See the difference? Intuitive Eating doesn't mean abandoning health, it's a way to increase both physical and emotional health by tuning in and listening to what your body needs.
