Hey I'm thinking about making a political OC and I was wondering if you could possibly point me towards any resources you used or if you have the time and energy could maybe give me a few tips? Thanks in advance!
oh! thanks so much for coming to me with this ( even if there’s no way i’m the first or BEST political OC out there, man, this is flattering ). i didn’t really go to any resources for my character, but have definitely found inspiration in political shows and movies. lesley is most closely tied to veep, because he doesn’t develop much as a person and certainly lacks a filter. house of cards is also big — and one of my favorites. if you’re looking for a little spark of motivation, maybe give one of those gems a try!
those don’t really count as resources, but they’re what got me going here. the west wing is also worth checking out. i’m sure there’s more genius political media i’m missing!
tips: these characters tend to be very flawed. maybe not necessarily as unlikable as my guy, but coming from someone who works under a giant, government-run company, you’re forced to go against your moral compass on occasion. to make them more interesting, be prepared to bend them close to their breaking point every once in a while. ( my OC has hit his, hence the coldness. )
do a little research on a political career. you want it to be something that you’re interested in, but still able to work into threads and plots with relative ease.
i can’t think of much else to say! just to have fun with it, push yourself a little bit outside of your comfort zone, and let me know if you need more specific advice!
