The farm is in bloom. For some reason, I didn’t expect it--immersed already in the idyll of oaks and mosses and pines, I somehow never reflected on how much of the flora around us was dead. And now! Suddenly! Life! Here near the manure pile: wild roses. Here against the last gate before arriving home: white petals from a blossoming dogwood blanket the path. Behind the house: a full redbud. Goldfinches and bluebirds (the latter of whom, we can surely agree, deserve a better name); Gabi saw a fat full frog pressed up with satisfaction against her evening window. Everywhere, spreading even faster than before: stinging nettle to dodge (or firetorch). New scents, the goats browsing in new corners, finding new leaves and grasses, everything each day a little bit greener.
Spring.
One of my favorite animals on the farm are the quail! I have been wanting quail for a long time so I first bought a few jumbo cortunix quail then jumped in to buying 100 bobwhites!!!

Ester doin' his thing
My nextdoor neighbour is the BEST. She had leftover tomato and bell pepper starts and asked me if I wanted them. I all but ran over to claim those tiny, green beauties, and then spent a few hours prepping and increasing the size of the tomato bed. Next the supports went in and then the deer netting! Took longer than I expected but I am delighted. 🤗 I am so fortunate to have such wonderful neighbours! ❤️ This coming week will be all about prepping the rest of the garden and getting things planted. So sorry Yvonne and I have been kinda absent lately. We have been very busy setting up our new property. Orchards, gardens and chickens have filled our brains.
