Sunday Seven
I’m home from Iceland - wonderful trip. Two weeks studying killer whales with Earthwatch off the vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) in South Iceland, and two weeks driving around Iceland’s ring road with my college-era friend Gena. Both trips were amazing. What a beautiful place!
Gena, returned home late last night to NC, they have a beach house/trailer in the line of Dorian on the Outerbanks. She’s heading there this morning to seal everything up and hoping for the best. This storm looks monstrous. Please be careful if you are in an area likely to be impacted.
I however, returned home to discover that my friend Jacqui organized my house, left me homemade food as well as a nice bottle of wine anf repotted a bunch of my plants. She was tasked with watering and did a great job! How lucky am I? I couldn’t find my coffeemaker this morning and was concerned, but I finally did and life is good now. It’s super dustey here and dusting/vacuuming is top priority today.
Delays leaving Iceland, and Dallas meant that we spent a lot of extra time sitting on a plane, ugh. Then the buses ran late so I arrived home after nearly 22 hours of traveling. William Gibson wrote - the problem with flying is that your body arrives at a location before your soul does. That’s how I feel today.
My house sitter found a pea hen with two little baby chicks in tow yesterday, she’s a trooper and climbed through a drainage pipe to round them up and put them in a pen for me. I do this routinely so that the chicks can grow a little bit bigger and have a better chance at survival in the chicken yard/neighborhood. They look to be a day or two old. So cute and tiny! Mom and baby doing well so far.
The chicks I had that were small when I left are now BIG. Some birds have died and I have to figure out which ones, a few chicks also died and the remaining birds look quite different than this did as chicks. Figuring out who is who from the Egg Game is going to be tough.
Another mass shooting, in Texas. Since the GOP is not interested in gun control, I suggest that we starting requiring that gun owners carry insurance on their firearms. I’m a gun owner, I’m willing to do this. Let people own as many firearms as they want but require that they carry insurance on each gun, and per type of gun based on how may people can be killed with it per minute. The bare minimum insurance would be liability insurance enough to cover the costs involved shooting and injuring, maiming or killing someone/people with your firearm. This would cover both your kid finding a gun not properly stored and accidentally shooting a friend, hunting accidents, and mass shooters. I believe that people would become more responsible gun owners.
