I watched this video and I got inspired. Fuck apple and google and microsoft — this is right up my alley. I recently had a pretty severe mental breakdown, took half a week off work, and received one of the worst haircuts of my entire life to date, so I am in the perfect headspace to embark on this quest for existential affirmation. Time to pull out my external hard drive collection and get to work.

One thing about me is I have MONUMENTAL hubris regarding anything DIY. Up to this point it has been mainly confined to small house repairs and experimental home cooking but why not expand into fucking around with IT? There’s no time like the present (especially this present). No, my disastrous 2-week doorknob replacement quest will not discourage me. My bathroom now has a doorknob and it even functions. I triumphed. How hard could this be? Worst case scenario i mess up one of my backup drives and I start again. LET’S GO.

I had the idea of using a smart switch to charge the laptop automatically, but since I figured out how to take its battery out that has gone really down in my list of priorities. I still have a few other things that I want to try, once I have the time:

I have a new lava lamp whose instructions says that it shouldn't be on for longer than 9 hours at a time, so I want to program a smart switch to handle that for me.

I want to figure out how to synchronise my logseq to-dos with HA's native to-do lists. I feel like it should be possible to hack something up by using syncthing to transfer logseq pages to the server and using a python script to extract the tasks from them.

I, uh, still need to improve my backup management. I have found a HDD that I can plug permanently to the laptop and it should be easy to tell HA to store the backups on the HDD.

I have code-server installed in order to facilitate editing the HA files, but right now I can only use it on the host laptop itself. I have tried to forward the port so I can access it from any device on my LAN, but I still haven't figured it out 😢
